Reel Repair(Drag Upgrades to Carbon) and General Maintenance

Since the Reel Master AlanT. retired, I found this local guy and sent him my 6yr. old ShimanoTR100, my 3yr.old Diawa Sealine(Salt) and both my Shimano(freshwater spinners to be cleaned and new Carbon Drag washers installed. I had them back in 2 weeks.
So far they are running smooth as butta'!!

Sorry to thread jack but I didnt know who to go to in the area and caught wind of a dude that repairs reels. I used a guy named Jim pre season to do some carbon upgrades and a complete douche of both reels. He did a great job for me and I have hesitated to post until I put the brakes on more than a few times. Good to go! Thanks for the reminder... May I suggest something? you guys should really try doing them yourself  it's really not that difficult and it's very cheap to do so normally about 30 to 40 dollars to replace all the main bearings in a fishing reel.

For starters get yourself a nice large Food Storage Container.  Make sure you have the correct schematic  for the fishing reel you're working on make sure you get a container of Grease I use penn Grease, you will need fishing reel oil plenty of a rags a few assorted screwdrivers Little brush to spread Grease small wrenches and some sort of degreaser I use bore cleaner
Works really well.

First thing you want to do is tear down the reel and check all the bearings to see if they spin smoothly get all the parts aside that you're going to replace look up their numbers on the schematic and write down the numbers so it will be easy to order.You can usually get parts
Directly from the manufacturer,you can get the schematic from the manufacturer two
You want to print a copy of it and have it next you when you start to put the reel back together.

Avet reels has a very good parts department and you can get parts for penn reels at www.replacementparts.com I just finished rebuilding a spinning real for hat trick, he gave me a fin-nor and the parts department for them had very quick service I replaced three bearings for $30.00 and now it runs like new I also rebuilt an avet reel for him replaced all the bearings in the reel for $40.00 and it runs like new.

About 15 years ago I tore apart my 1960 something Schwinn beach cruiser. It's still in like  40 pieces in a box in my garage. I can't fathom the itty bitty reel gears. I'll send it to the pros.

I only clean mine, but that alone makes a big difference.  I sent my Avet in for repair after some WSB's ruined the berings.  They replaced them free within the first year, with receipt.  And it's $40 to have them service it past the first year, or without a receipt.  They had it back to me in a week.  I think that im going to try Shimano's and Abu Garcia's repairs as well.  I think that I saw it was only like $25 for shimano reels.

Avets are relatively easy to service.  About the only thing to keep track of are the tiny spool spring washers that are very easy to loose track of.  The bearings that are more susceptible to failure are the 2 spool bearing and the pinion bearing as these are load bearing.  There are 3 other bearings, the pressure plate bearing and the two driveshaft bearings.  All bearings from Avet are sealed.  I believe the bearings are ~$5 each plus a $5 shipping charge. The woman working the parts counter, Lucine, is pretty knowledgable as well.
