That's a good size shark. Good thing they where on a boat and not a kayak.

Yea, no need to kill a fish like that as well as the 225lb halibut caught off Washington coast recently.

I would have release it if I knew it was going to live. After a battle it put up what would its chances of survival be? I agree it should have been let go since it was not caught for the Mako Tournament, but it is a world record catch.

As for 225 pound halibut. yes they chould go back too. Besides being the breeders their meat is kinda tough compared to the smaller "chickens." I plan on hanging into one in a few weeks in Alaska and if it is too big I will let it go. I've hooked three real big ones so far and never got one it. Two spit the hook and one came off cuz one of my guys dropped his line next to mine and the braids just cut eachother to pieces. I cried!!!! :smt010

These guys are jackasses....with the shark populations the way they are now, why keep'em, especially the big dominate ones

The population of shortfin mako shark off California is not being over- fished. Present fishery harvest levels are well below harvest guidelines imposed by NOAA Fisheries. There is some concern that fishing pressure may negatively affect sharks that have aggregated in pupping areas off southern California and northern Mexico. However, further investigation is needed to clarify this issue

Although this was from 2006.  Still, why the hate?

This shark was caught last Monday off Huntington. A huge animal by standards for the specie. We lament all the time around here about keeping huge lings, rockfish and stripers. What's the difference here? This kill was for glory only. Killed by a man who kills for fun not food. Fuck them.

What I don't get it that when big sharks are caught and killed then their meat is donated to the homeless?
Did anyone else catch that at the end of the video news clip? Killing of gamefish to be donated to homeless people? Wow.

I don't know these guys, so they may indeed be jackasses, or not. Could be that the fish was fought until it could no longer be revived. All kinds of crazy things can happen at sea.

If the shark was able to survive, I think it should have been released.
Seems these days that the real glory is in capture, document, and release for the giants of any species (except maybe snakeheads). I would have much more respect for this shark crew if they had managed that. With our technology today I believe it is possible (recall that video of the hot marlin carving up the mob in the cockpit of the sportfisher, then releasing itself).

That fish was an amazing example of its species.

As long as we have an authority posting records (length, weight, line class, etc...), then we will have someone out there trying to catch the very last of that species in an effort to break the record ... which will include fish below, at or above the current record weights.

I don't lament about catching or keeping big fish....then again I don't succumb to group think or feelgood rationale, anybody that wants to preach otherwise can look at a reg book then pound sand.
