Fortunately this person was able to get help.  I've never thought of floating over the kelp as something dangerous.  Anyone else encounter such a situation?

Not enough info to even speculate what may have happened.

generally speaking, I seek kelp as refuge from wind, current and mostly power boats.  My guess is that this person needs some practice getting back in the yak, kelp or no.

Speculation only but the article says he swamped. So I'm thinking no pump. Kayak full of water in the middle of a kelp bed and I would imagine your goin nowhere

If this is someone here, I'd like to extend an offer to you to take you out on the water at Santa Cruz.  We'll go over the basics of safety and paddling and we just might get a little fishing in.  If you'd like to stay out of the public's eye, just send me a PM and we'll keep the whole thing on the down low.

I think that's really cool of you Allen!  Hope they do take you up on that offer!

My first thought is, possibly got snagged and flipped over.  Happens to a lot of folks...

That's a generous offer Allen.          My best guess is that was a Sit In kayak that he swamped.     If so those take a whole different skill set to get back into,  especially if solo.   Without floatation inside, its nearly impossible.

It seem like there's an awful lot of kayak fishermen, ( newbies )  that have never really practiced re-entry from a SOT
Might be cool if we offered a group lesson / practice session somewhere.      Off the beach here at Santa Cruz, where they can practice a little surf entry/exit.
I'll extend an offer to help out.             If it helps prevent a near tragedy like this, it would be well worth the time spent.

I am thinking of taking the blame just for the free professional help. But then again, people are always telling me I need professional help.

Sounds like someone didn't have knife, might not have had wetsuit.  I can't imagine that individual being part of this community. If they are, then shame on them for not paying more attention to everyone talking about safety.
Hopefully that individual will do a little more online research and find this site, so he/she doesn't get into another dangerous situation requiring rescue.
I like the idea of Baitman's proposal.
