OK, it's getting really tough to sleep now...    :smt017 :BangHead:

From 330 to 530 this morning I tossed and turned and pondered the best way to view GoPro videos of released fish at check-in.  I'm wondering, can you take the SD card out of a GoPro, put it in another digital camera, and watch the GoPro vids?  If so, that's what you GoPro users should do - plan to have a buddy or a buddy's camera so you can show your vids.  I may or may not have the capability to download a video, and I won't be doing it for anyone who isn't placing in the tournament.  So you'll need to find a way to show your video, and if you can't, you'll need to hang out until the scoring is done and then show it somehow if you're in the prizes.

Any ideas?  Any volunteers to have a laptop present and help with video viewing?

People with standard handheld digicams:  don't come into the check-in area until you have your releases pinpointed and ready to show.  There won't be any time for a few minutes of searching for your clips.

This is going to be challenging, and the future of C&R bonus at GS will be determined based on how it goes.

It's a good problem to have.   :smt001

Just a thought,
It would take a bit of time to pinpoint your C&R on the vid, so why not have the vidio checked in after you have checked in all the anglers. Being as the video would only count for the anglers in the top spots, there should only be a small amount of videos to check and should only take a short time.
Maybe have the video check in at the Tides before the pot luck so as to allow the appropriate anglers time to find the video and have it ready to view. This would also eliminate the need to congest the beach with wives bringing laptops down to show video. I also would prefer not to have all my electronic equipment (laptop and cables) exposed to salt and sand and cahos on the beach.
I will be glad to help check in, but am not a computer guy and am still figuring out my own camera

Thats really the perfect solution to the overall problem of video review. But still I wonder how to display GoPro video without a puter...

I was wondering about this yesterday. Since I have an Olympus that needs the special frikkin program to download the pics, plus I won't have my computer there, I figured it would go this way. At least I can zoom in on the trough if measurement if it is in doubt.

If I end up needing the C&R points I'll be sure to have the pics queued up .

GoPro uses .mp4 files for video creation.  So if by chance your handheld camera can play MP4 files, Eric's idea might work.  However I just checked my Pentax Optio W80, and it only creates AVI files, so it wont work for it.  But one like the Nikon Coolpix AW110 says that it is MP4 capeable, so it might work on that one.

I do appreciate the honesty, but it's too late to change the policy.  I'm actually trying to accomodate those who may not be prepared to show their video releases, so if people aren't prepared to capture a measurement and release on video and then show it at the beach then they don't have to worry about the HUGE pain in the ass - they can just keep their fish and measure them in.  I've already explained elsehwhere that this standard is based on my analysis that a photo is too easily manipulated, and it absolutely doesn't prove a release.

The way you get bonus points for a release is to video the measurement and the release - if it's a pain in the ass then don't do it.

Mac laptops normally are able to view mp4 files (at least mine does). Put a call out for anyone bringing his/her laptop.

I'm planing on only turning my gopro on when I'm ready to release a fish therefore there will be no searching through the file.
I'm bringing my laptop to show Eric just incase I place. But on the laptop you can view the file without downloading it.

Eric-

Would self reporting without video being shown on the beach work, followed by verification prior to the potluck if that angler will be on the leaderboard?  Fail to verify and no points.

I have a laptop and I can replay gopro videos as mp4 and/or convert them to .avi, and I'm happy to accommodate people but I can't do it for everyone, and I can't do the potential leaderboard folks on the beach and still get my sausage smoked for the potluck. I need to be at camp.

I checked the apple app for gopro, it doesn't replay video, only controls the camera, so that won't work.

Dude, the LAST thing we want is for you to be stressed. So let's figure this out together and put your mind at ease.

I like Crash's idea.
Submit your scorecard when you're done fishing, and I'll review video-releases for anybody placing in the Top 10, at the Tides before our potluck.
Crash, if I can use your laptop to review GoPro video-releases, I promise to take extra good care of it. Or if anybody else has a laptop that I can use to review video. This will probably only be necessary for GoPro users. Because I'll be able to review video directly from the viewfinder of most other point & shoot digital cameras. So the other option besides a laptop would be to borrow someone's LCD Back Pak.

This is probably the best idea.  Kind of a trust and verify situation.  If I make it up, I would be happy to bring 1-3 computers up to aid in the process.

We can even pull screen shots into a video of the top contenders and label them in the video for everyone to view to ensure accuracy.

Sure thing. Only concern I have is a potentially short battery life on my old, well travelled laptop.
