I am looking at getting a wet suit before trying out the ocean up here. I use waders and a belt in the lagoons and sloughs, but the ocean scares me. I am 6'1" and 295. I have no idea where to look or what to look for. Thanks.

You'll probably get a variety of opinions on this one.

The way I look at it a 3mil would be fine if you just wanted to protect yourself for a quick dumping and re mounting of the yak.  On the other hand if you truly want to protect your self (life) I'd recommend a 7mil FJ with a thinner say 2-3 mil jacket, and at least 5mil booties.  It doesn't happen often, but it does happen, if things go really bad and you lose your yak offshore you're gonna need some good thermal protection cause you could be in the water a long time.

Now, unless you have the biggest bladder in the world or don't mind taking a leak on yourself (in a dive situation that might not be so bad but above water I imagine it's a pretty unpleasant thing) you'll need a relief zipper.  I haven't seen anything other than a 3mil with the relief zipper, but I have put zippers in 2 suits and it's not all that hard, just some glue and a short heavy duty zipper installed where it belongs instead of the full length ones. Or you could pay a shop to install it.

My outfit consists of a 5mil FJ with relief zipper installed (I have my 7mil but haven't got the zipper in it yet) a 2 mil jacket (fits well is strechy and doesn't restrict the paddilg motion) and either 5mil dive booties or the NRS Boundry shoe which just has a high top and is supposed to be waterproof (maybe).

Now even though I put up links, they're just for show, I'd encourage you to buy local, a little customer service can go a long ways.

Or you could get a dry suit.

I have a kokatat I got off Hojoman, and it has been good to me.  I agree with the previous comments on thickness.  Of course there is a trade off in there, at 295 you may have to worry about heat exhaustion with a thickersuit, so adjust accordingly to your water consumption.

Yeah, the heat you can build up in my outfit (or any other to varying degrees) is undeniable, and needs to be considered.  I have tossed water on myself more than once to cool down.

Greg at pacific outfitters, Cajun on here, should be able to hook you up. I have a 3 mil that might fit you depending on your body composition that I'm willing to sell. Shoot me a pm if you want to take a look at it, I'm in Eureka.

I was all ready to tell you I've got an XL NRS Ultra Farmer John for sale - used maybe 4 times but not sure it would fit.

For your size I think that you will enjoy the comfortable fit of a NRS Grizzly.  I really love mine, and its the only one that has fit me so well.... especially in my 'frontal' area  :smt044  It also has a relief zipper, which is nice if you dont wanna reek by the end of the day.  http://www.nrsweb.com/shop/product.asp?pfid=2219+G&pdeptid=1162  Coupled with some decent neoprene boots and a polar fleece and splash jacket you have a pretty good immersion setup for fishing on the salt.

Wetsuit, dry suit, Gore-Tex paddling pants, the most important thing on the ocean is to have a relief zipper. Can not, or most dificult to paddle ashore to relieve yourself you don't have one.
