Can't control the itch anymore so Johlee and I are going to scout for some pinks this Saturday.
CS reports has been spotty so not putting my hopes high but surely looking forward to good time OTW.
If you're game for a ~6 mi. paddle/peddle minimum, company welcome.

Meeting at Bayside Marine at 6am and parking/launching on the other side of harbor. CH11

Saw your previous hookup "HereFishyFishy" so we'll try to look for you there.

SC should be the best bet right now, only maybe 5 miles straight out to the fishy water Wish I could join you

Hope you find the fish

I launched with Danny (superd270) his intention was to fish for salmon and Bear and my self went out for cod. We lost  visual and radio contact with him near the Mile buoy. The Reports I  received on salmon was it was slow. Only three out of Point Pinos on the other side of the Bay from one PB trolling.

Sounds like the beginning of a survival story, anybody heard from him?

How did you do at the Mile Buoy?  I launched at 7am and went stright to the Mile Bouy and beyond; for zero fish. I hope you did better.

We eventually met at the west doc and he told us what happen, I'll let him chime in...

modoka_matt ; Bear and I was following the surface bait at the mile buoy but didn't catch anything there. So headed west towards the light house at the dept of 50ft and found some floating kelp patties and anchored on, as we drifted. dropped down and two nice blacks, a double came up.  we just kept paddling west to get top on the fish and picked up one or two per drift as the wind pushed us of the water around 10:30/11:00.

How did you do?

I went straight for the mile buoy in the morning.  I was marking bait and fish consistently for about half the way to the buoy.  Didn't get a single bite though.  Tough start to the season for me so far.

I did go out last Saturday 5/11 towards 3 Trees but no dice.

Met Murphy throughout the whole day: After loading the yak on the truck, misplaced the key and took me a while to find it but since I woke up early, I did arrive at Bayside Marine on time. Then caught up with Alien and Bear along with my supposed to be salmon partner Johlee. While enroute to 3 Trees, my mirage drive broke. One of the fins got dislodged as I run through the kelp and I hv to manually reinsert it but have no way of securing the locking allen head screw. However was able to manage to continue on. Then the vhf radio broke with an error I cannot fix: "release pit key" and kept honking like crazy until I turned it off. Then I got leg crumps, and so on. I was able to join the fleet and trolled for some time but mostly on the inside as the wind started to pick up by 11:30. Did not see Johlee as his yak has a motor so he traveled faster.

Finally, I gave up and decided to head in. Saw Alien and Bear at the launch loading up with their limits of RF's. Decided to give RF a try so got some gears/bait from Alien and Bear but when I reach the Point, the drift was so fast I cannot stay where the fish are. So after a few attempts, decided to end the day by joining the sailing fleet enjoying the 15 knts wind.

But wait, it's not finished. Murphy has not left me yet. On the way home, after 5 miles of travel, hit a heavy traffic along H-17 where we were on a stop n go traffic moving 2-3 miles per hour which lasted for 45 minutes. One car toppled over and was upside down on its roof about 13 miles into H-17.

Was so dead tired that afternoon that all I can do was sleep when I got home.

Anyways, that was the bad side. The good side is:
  • I got the exercise and continue to exercise to get fit more
  • Do a thorough checkup of the AI
  • Check/Fix the VHF radio
  • Further reduce the clutter in the yak.
  • Make sure to partner up with someone within sighting or radio hailing distance.

I am ready to go out again after I do all the above. Targeting the 25th.

BTW guys, the perches are biting like crazy at HMB. Buckets full for the Mexicans and Vietnamese fishing the area by Mavericks. Alien and I might give it a try at 4pm Thu with high tide at 5:02pm.

GUYS A WORD OF CAUTION.

If you want to paddle out and catch salmon, Santa Cruz is really not the place to do it.  Not right now anyway. Yes 5-6 miles straight out there are some fish.  Some days are better than others and there's quite a few skunks on PBs who can get there in 15 minutes and troll for 8 hours. (and we don't hear from them do we??)

The wind comes up every day, and with chop windwaves and swell it gets nasty out there.  A 2-hour paddle in the morning can translate to a 5 hour paddle trying to get in.  Add to that a few hours paddling on the troll and I'd question most of our abilities to keep it up (definitely MY abilities).

Also right now it's a krill bite and troll speeds are significatly faster.  2.5-3.8 its.  (YES)

Fish are on the surface in the morning around dawn, then they dive.  Catches after 9:30 are most likely 120-220 feet down.  That means a 20-pound ball for the PB's.

Way too much effort for dubious returns IMO.

Wait till the anchovies come in and launch from Moss or Lover's Point, where the fish can be Soooo much closer.

It's a safety concern, really.  Few of us are equipped for that kind of effort (Blue kayak being a notable exception).  I won't do it that's for sure.

Gotta agree with Allen, Monterey Bay is a different ball of wax, mostly because the winds can get tricky

I took a shot at it once by going up to Natural Bridges first and out about four miles and then aimed at Soquel Hole, seemed like it would be an easy ride with the wind and a big swell running right at Monterey

I had my trolling gear out watching Santa Cruz go by and had this brilliant epiphany that if I made it out to the hole the only places I'd be landing would either be Moss or Monterey

By the time I chickened out I was moving so fast that paddling hard as I could I still arced way around and had to slug it out to get back up to Santa Cruz

Pretty much kicked my ass

A worse scenario is wind blowing you offshore, for some reason it does that more down there

Seems like a natural for an AI, having the option to sail

The ideal arrangement would be to have a ride waiting in Moss or Monterey
