Never used one. Just pay attention to your rod tip and you will be fine.

I have used one since I mouth hooked a 77incher on a bait check  :smt044, and I out fish 6-0 everyone I fish with who doesn't use balancers.  I use a commercial balancer and the Cameron method; both work.

I made mine out of a scotty mount bolted to the bottom of a Hobie gun mount.

The device can range from a swiveling rod holder to just a Y shaped bicycle hanger. The idea is to balance the rod like a see saw (spelling?) to detect bites, very effective on sturg.

How hard is it to get it to balance on a moving yak? I imagine they sway a lot more when anchored than boats?

If you get the quick release anchor set up correctly (as far back as possible) most kayaks track perfectly. In lesser tides you can drag a foot or two to keep the anchor line tight.

Balancer...here is a real sophisticated one....works like a charm.
