Joel thanks for your response and those of others.  I would like to see if I can make it to the HMB derby but have to check out my schedule first.  Someone told me that HMB has rougher conditions for kayaking than Santa Cruz because its less protected.  Do you have to launch through the surf or can you enter from the warf/dock?  Are the areas good to fish close enough for a fairly new kayaker to reach or do you have to paddle a fair ways out?  I have only launched from the marina at Santa Cruz so far and haven't entered through the surf yet.  But I would love to be able to come out and meet some experienced kayakers and wouldn't mind launching from HMB if I can learn the area since I live in San Jose.

HMB is a protected launch no surf at all.  It goes tend to be a bit rougher than SC but the fishing is generally better IMHO. Come on down you will learn a lot and see a ton of rigged kayaks.
