A single day tournament really has no comparison to AOTY at all. Where AOTY has no rules on when and how long you can fish, a single day tournament evens the odds considerably. Where some might have more skill than others, knowledge of the area, tackle known to slay in the area and experience on the ocean, the novice can and will win tournaments based on sheer fortune and fate. Even the experienced have off days. I hope that a newer person to open ocean fishing wins this tournament.

I didn't mean to say that a newb fisherman has no chance, because that clearly isn't true.  If you follow my handicapping and rounding to 200 runners for convenience of math I put my chances to win at 1 in 500 and Robs at 1 in 50.  I don't think that's too far off.  There is still a lot of luck in a single day event.

If a number of people, or even one person, achieve some level of spiritual enlightenment regarding how sharing the outdoors with others and intently challenging ourselves is a gateway to fulfillment, then I will be happy.

Craig may have been a little extreme to say that winning is nothing, but I think he's on the right track.  Winning means alot to the group because it's part of a validation of our actions and intentions, but, really, being there, challenging yourself, sharing with others, and breaking through to a new level of awareness about how your soul is largely composed of the value you place on love, friendship and how you give of yourself in a group...  these are the things that I hope people achieve.  Prizes are fun.  Learning valuable lessons about the importance of living your life with honor and respect are what make fun even possible.

Being an honorable sportsman is way more important than what you catch.

Don't put  me in the top tier. There are a whole lot of people much better than I am on the salt. I've not been to lucky or good in ocean tourneys.

" In effect, you run the risk of scaring away your customers, the people that allow you to pay for your hobby along the way."  I never said anything about paying for this fishing hobby. I spend way to much on this addiction and get very little in return. That comment had to do with racing cars.

The last thing I will say in this thread is this. If no one cares about the competition, lets put all of our names in a hat and draw a winner. Who cares about performance?

Ok, one more. Have fun, be safe, and keep the seating side up.

You guys are peaking too soon!

Put down the Penns and get out there and catch some big crappies. It's prime time now!

P.S. If I was in this thing I would be all over the Pacific butts.... In fact, maybe I'll show up and finally get some salt on my yak.

Good luck all  :smt006

Eric,

I wouldn't be able to show up until sometime Saturday or very late Friday. If I get up there I can help out where you need me.

I am a newb in comparison to the OGs on here, but given that this is my 3rd GS, I like my chances.  O0. It is just rockfish, right?  Any competition where one can drink beer and hang out with 200 of your buddies is good competition in my book.

My secret weapon will be to use the jighead in the goodie bag and stalk a local or an OG. I will be on the beach at O dark thirty to stalk the wise ones... b/c they will be otw early...

I miss the countdown btw...

Peace & blessings!

There are actually some real good fishermen participating in this one (every AOTY champ since 2006? ...plus paid-pros ...plus crafty vets ...plus the local ringers). So it's gonna require a little luck to win....do you feel lucky? Well, do ya? :-)

Crash that was spot-on. Good post & hope to meet you @ da Cove!

It will be an interesting tournament for sure!  I have my hopes that some gritty newb in a borrowed yak will take home the Cuda (that is of course if I don't win  :smt044). Jim Sammons and Drew Gregory would be a challenge to fish against if this were a mothership bass tournament  :smt003  I think the likes of the previous AOTY champs, salty veterans and Jefferson locals are those most likely to take the gold.  I'm happy as long as a sac local places in the top 3 (No pressure, guys).
