I recently purchased a used Hobie Outback to replace my Cobra Marauder.  The cobra had a very nice center hatch where I put my days catch.  I have not found a suitable way of securing/protecting my catch on the Hobie.  The front hatch is not big enough for the salt water variety of fish I'm after.  I'm looking for a hard sided sealed container that will cool and protect the fish until I paddle in.  I'm looking at different ice chest varieties that will fit behind my seat.  Where do you hold catch from the ocean?  I guess the question would be appropriate for freshwater fish also.  Shelter Cove is the only place I have fished with my kayaks.  I'm looking to hold salmon and bottom fish.  Thank you for your input.

I like burlap.  Keep it wet and as the moisture evaporates it cools the fish.  There are some dedicated fish bags out there - gave one as a prize at GS3 I think...  They of course require carrying extra weight in blue ice and dedicating space - they're usually shaped for a bow-mount.  Burlap in my tankwell or even up between my legs is good with me, but I've got lots of space on my X-Factors.

Planning for catching some fish - it's a good problem to have.   :smt001

+1
The burlap bags are cheap if not free and they work great.Check locoal coffee shops which give them away for free or any feed store which usually charge a buck or two. Two of them work great, one to put the fish in and one to dunk in the water and throw over the top.

Went into WallyMart earlier with my tape measure to check sizes of ice chests.  The only ice chest they had that fit was the cube.  My buddy happened to have one, so I tried it out on my Outback.  Once I popped the wheels off, it fit snugly.  It is a great size, taking into account a limit of salmon and bottom fish.  I'm a bit concerned with it overall size and weight.  It weighed in at 10.2 pounds.  Add a couple of fish and the center of gravity drops.  For $24.00 I'm thinking of trying it one out.

I use 2 game clips, one large one I put my catch on and another I have just in case I need to secure a large fish and the first stringer in being used. I keep my fish in the tank well covered with burlap. It's the easiest way to roll. A quick dunk once and a while and your set. I've used ice chests before but if the wind kicks up it can act like a sail. If you do go with an ice chest I would suggest freezing water bottles and carrying them instead of regular ice, your catch will stay cold and you can drink the water as it thaws. Plus it's easier to drain all the excess water weight.
I try to be a minalminst and keep my tank well empty to hold fish.

Sounds like the burlap sack is the preferred method so far.

This is my ideal fish-handling process below.
Step 1: catch fish
Step 2: put fish on gameclip and cut gills
Step 3: let fish bleed-out in tankwell (covered by wet burlap) while dunking fish in water every 15min
Step 4: after fish is bled & dead, gut it & toss entrails overboard
Step 5: stuff fish in a soft-side cooler bag inside hull (full of frozen water bottles so melted ice doesn't end up inside your hull if cooler leaks)

^ this is how I roll as well. Extra weight above the water line is never your friend. Burlap takes up little space and works great to keep the sun off the fish. I put them on ice right away as soon as I am back at the truck.

I never put fish inside any of the hatches because it is hard to get the fish smell o. Stick with burlap :smt003
