Hey all, was curious to try some clam digging around the Mendocino Coast area. I fish out of my yak when i visit the coast, but I would love to get my wife involved in some harvesting as well. Looking for some family fun clam fishing. Any input or tips on where to go? I watch youtube vids, but it seems to be all in Oregon. Any advice is well appreciated, thanks :smt006

I think clams can be found just about anywhere when the tide is out.  Mud flats in bays would probably be best, but I can't think of anywhere in Mendocino County that fits that description.

What kind of clams are you looking for?  Razor clamming is popular in Oregon but I don't know of anywhere south of McKinleyville that has razors.

A few years ago the GF and I paddled up Big River from the park right under hiway 1.  It was low tide and there were what looked like allot of clam tube holes in the mudflats just a little ways up from the launch.  That area is all salt water and I assumed they were clams, might have been something else like ghost shrimp but it might be worth researching.

Make sure you put in a trip report, ALL reports are good reports.

Clams are good with chorizo too. Good-luck to you on your quest for the elusive mendocino clam beds.
