I've had a few people ask about this year's requirement for the catch and release bonus at Gimme Shelter.  A video must show the fish measured and released.  This is a tough standard, and it should be obvious that I'm way biased!  I'm not doing it to make people live up to the way I do it - I'm doing it because of a few reasons:

1:  Strength of Proof
- look at all the squabbles about AOTY measurements - the irony is that anyone could cheat that system!
- the video showing a fish being measured and released is WAY more solid than photos;
- future competitions such as AOTY, kayakwars...etc. will likely abandon the photo at some point because it can be faked, doctored, manipulated...etc.;
- the standard will become video, especially to prove release, IMO.

2:  Practicality with 150 - 180 participants
- it's too difficult to view trough photos for dozens of people at check-in;  BTDT.
- fewer people will pursue the C&R bonus (which is not my ideal), so check-in will go smoother;
- videos can be captured and compiled for a cool GS-C&R 2013 video montage.

3:  Videoing yourself handling fish and sharing that media with others is a discipline
- I've been the recipient of so many compliments for C&R on video, and I've suffered through some harsh criticisms as well;
- The compliments and appreciation of others leads to a high level of fulfillment, and the criticisms do too!
- Putting yourself in a spotlight with goals of challenging yourself and impressing others (I am unashamed!) leads to a rewarding interaction where even the critcisms can help you to become a better fisherman and a better person.

My main motivator here is in #3.  Revealing your true self to others is very difficult, and if you don't like what you see when you do it then you will either make changes or stop showing so much of yourself.  I believe in using these revelations of yourself and the ensuing feedback - both admiratoin and backlash - to grow and find more enjoyment and fulfillment from the sport.  This has happened for me, and I'm not done yet!  I want others to experience how striving for a true experience, documenting it and showing it to others, and then making adjustments to your process through the results can lead to an extreme improvement in your game.  I often think about my motivations to capture my experiences on video and share them.  I wanted to tussle with another one of those hot Humboldt Lagoons trout the other day, but, even more, I wanted a story to tell!  One thing I've learned about how to tell a compelling and inspirational story is that the Truth holds way more value than details that I could make up.  So in seeking a true experience to share I really work hard to achieve something special - there is no option for fabrication or embellishment, and the video helps to uphold that standard.  I didn't know all of this before I'd played with the video and the sharing of experiences, and now I'm sure of how powerful it is and what an advantage I can create with it.  Think about it.

I will be lenient with judgements regarding videos.  If you have a rough and shaky vid showing what looks like a nice fish, you're trying to measure it against a hawg trough, other measuring device or markings on your boat, and you release it (the easy part) then you'll get your bonus, but lack of clarity may lead to a conservative estimate of your fish's length.  It can also be a teammate's video of you and the fish.  Let's say O2B catches and handles a mature ling that's clearly over 30".  Bird videos Allen holding the fish up, but it goes apeshit, so rather than risk harming the fish or himself Allen releases it boatside.  I will grant the release bonus even though the fish wasn't measured, but a conservative estimate of the fish's length will be used.  For people with a Boga or other gripper the video shouldn't be too hard.  Closed mouth will not be required, but two lips touching the trough is the standard.

I'm open to discussion about this, but I don't think I can change the policy at this point - it will stand and we'll see if any of my philosophical musings lead to breakthroughs in fishing and personal growth for others.   :smt001

Thanks for sharing your vision Eric.   :smt001

So, if somebody comes in with a GoPro and they have a vid of their Caught and Released fish....will you have a laptop and SD card reader there or is each participant responsible for figuring out how to show you the video at the beach?

Just thinking of logistics and how it could get complicated...even more so say if it is raining like a few years ago? Maybe have your truck there and one person designated to review video in the cab?

No matter what, I can't wait to get up there!!

 :smt006

Sincerely,

Jim

Keep lots of towels handy.  Wet hands and electronics don't mix well. :smt044 :smt001

Thanks for explaining the video part.  I'm going need to get some practice here soon.  Maybe tomorrow I can get some practice.

Awesome.  I plan on shooting some fish and popping some abs early on and then doing Catch/Video/Release after I jump back on the yak.   :smt003

Thinking positive and hoping for the best obviously.   :smt002 :smt004

Playing your video on your camera right at check-in is ideal.

Well at least I got a new camera after dropping the last one in the drink! So I am guessing that we will all have some type of wristband or logo needed to be part of the video some no early catches caught on tape? Can't wait to get that Big Greenling on video! :smt044

So, for the gopro crowd...will they have to download the entire day's worth of video, then skip to the parts where they video a C&R fish? (like, is it 1 long video/file? Or do you stop filming in between fish?) I'm only asking because I have never used a gopro. And if we have to download large files, then skip around the video to find C&R fish...it m/b time-consuming, so we might need multiple laptops on site. Just thinking out loud.

I would think since this is a tourney that you not take the "Big JIm Extended video" and only concentrate on your Catch and releases.  :smt005

The easiest way would be for everyone to figure out their points on their own and then just review photos from lets say the top 20 anglers.
