I'm looking to rent a spit for my kids birthday that is coming up next month. The wife wanted a luau theme... Upon looking online, I'm pretty stumped as to where to rent one. I know there's plenty of knowledge here so I'm asking for your brotherly help ncka. Where can a brotha rent a roasting spit.

Consider just buying a pre-roasted pig from an Asian food store (Ranch 99 sells them) or Asian BBQ restaurant?   Luau's don't spit roast anyways, do they?  They pit roast.

If you decide to do it your self, I used an UN-Treated tree pole. The biggest draw back was it has to be manually turned. It took 3 guys taking turns about 6 hours!!!

That was going to be my back up plan if I couldn't find an auto turning spit Allen. Really want to roast one though, I think it would be an awesome experience. And as far as turning a pig manually for 6 hours... LOL. Must have lots of beers for extra man power.

We have done a couple of camping trips where whole pigs were roasted. The first was a wooden box with a metal top. The fire was built on the top of the box creating an oven. You can see photos of this set-up here                                                                         http://www.wanderthewest.com/forum/index.php?/topic/1955/

I can't find photos of the other set-up, but essentially two walls about three feet high were made with concrete blocks. The pig was pressed between two sections of chicken wire fencing, like a giant version of those BBQ fish holders you see. That rested on the walls with a fire below it. This required two people to regularly flip the fencing and pig. Took about six hours and, as you pointed out, lots of beer.

Good luck.

I just remembered I attended a party where the pig was cooked like this^. It turned out fantastic.

Yeah we had some fellas cook a Pig Turducken like that for my grandma's 90th birthday party. Back home they call it a Cajun Microwave.   :smt004

Ive built several over the years out of 55 gallon drums and used electric chainsaw motors to turn. however in most cases this setup is way overkill ive only done a few 100 to 150 pound hogs and I believe its all in the fun of watching it cook while drinking beer and chatting it up.

now im getting hungry.
Where did he go george
