3/26 Black Point Report

I launched at about 7:00 from Black point after getting bait at Port Sonoma.  There were a couple of guys fishing from the dock an a couple other boats launching as well.  Perfect weather... flat calm.

It was nearly low tide, so I paddled out (way out) down the river to the mouth and stayed to the right, outside of the channel and kept heading straight toward the pumphouse (which seemed like an eternity away).  I went a couple of miles and for much of the trip, once I got outside the channel, I was in 1.5 to 2.5 feet of water.  I finally dropped anchor in about 3.5 feet of water, half way between the channel and the big dolphin (pole) that is sticking out of the bay straight out from Hamilton Field.  

I wound up with two undersized sturgeon, one which was a dink and the other which was ~38".  The 38 incher was fun... immediately took air when I set the hook and took full air a number of times during the fight.  I set the hook on another one that felt very solid but it came unbuttoned within 10 seconds.  I also caught a small ~18" striper and a ~20" flounder.  All fish released.

At high tide, I trolled most of the way back with every plug and lure I had to no avail... marking lots of suspended fish on the way back... presumably stripers.  Water was dirty... only about a foot of visibility maximum.  Regularly saw sturgeon jumpers on the way back in.  Never took the fly rod out of the quiver.

The guys on the dock had caught two sturgeon since I'd left... one shaker and on 53 inches.  Another boat that was hauling out had a 63" fish that weighed 70#... quite a fattie.  

All in all a great morning... I'll definintely go to this spot again to fish the end of the out going and the incoming tide.  There really seems to be some hot sturgon action in those parts right now.

Nice... I'm glad you checked it out and had good success.  Erik, you're still the "sturgeon king" in my book.  I would have joined you today, but the striper bite got the best of me.

Let me know when you go again... but on second thought it really seems that you have your best luck when you're solo.
