I've been kayaking a little more than usual lately and since codzilla and my 4 and a half hour paddle back to buckhorn into the wind, I found that I have tendonitis in my left elbow. A really good case of it too. I can barely touch the point of my elbow to anything.

I searched through the forum looking for some answers and found that I'm using my upper body instead of my core to paddle, apparently a technique that I have always used. I am going to move my foot rests a little closer to me to try to utilize some core from paddling.

Any other tips anyone? I used to have to wear an elbow brace for throwing a ball. Was wondering if that would help?
Thanks

I had it last year. If caught early, large doses of Ibuprofen for two weeks is prescribed.
I did that and rested it. It took a while, but it healed.
Good luck.

What kind of paddle do you use?

Also, concentrate on gripping your paddle less tightly.  Put your thumbs on the top if you have to ... it naturally relaxes your grip.

Stretch your arm to full extention, with your free hand free hand bend your hand down slowly and add additional resistance, now alternate and stretch it upwards with your hra hand on the fingertips and pull back wards.  This is what my OT had me do for mine at work.  Do this a couple of times a day an dit will help with it.

A Werner touring paddle.

Thanks for the advice guys. And thank you squidder for those stretch techniques. It already feels better! That and the ibuprofen.

Bummer.  I had it in my left elbow.  I was doing low weights -7 lbs high rep (30) each morning.  It got so bad that I had pain in the evening and sometimes it woke me up.

My solution unfortunately was to stop doing the weights entirely and rest both elbows for a year.  I don't have the chronic pain anymore, nor do I have the upper body strength as I did last year.  But I sleep better, and the Hobie doesn't stress my elbows.

As far as I  know, tennis elbow heals by itself with rest.  Good luck.

Long ago I used to get tennis elbow playing racquetball.  I don't know if it will help with paddling, but I used a brace around my upper forearm. It was a simple velcro thing about 2.5" wide that you just cinched up. Relief was almost instant, and I could continue playing.

Raydon +1 high reps. Always make sure you ice down after every workout +motrin.
I use to play a lot of league ball and I had it in my left knee from jumping (jumpers knee). I had to work out doing reps of 25 - 30 per set and then ice down for 20min on 20 off 20 on every time I played. 4 weeks later I was good as new... almost. Mike

A Werner touring paddle.

Which one?  Some people have problems using the larger size paddle blades as they put too much stress on their joints.

I went and looked at it and it's actually a Carlisle magic. Werner must have some good advertising to put that in my brain!

That's a pretty basic paddle, a little on the heavy side and not as efficient as some others.  You may want to try a lighter, more efficient paddle so you're not working as hard.

Another great remedy and excellent therapy that I found is this............... Take the small Dixie wax cups and freeze water in them to the top. Then after they are frozen , take one out and peel the paper back about half the depth of the cup. Hold onto the paper end and use the ice to massage the afflicted area 10 minutes at a time 3 times a day. Tendonitis is small tears in the tendon, Ice massage reduces swelling and stimulates blood flow to the area at the same time, making healing of the area faster. DO NOT paddle or do anything that makes it hurt until it is healed or you may wind up with a chronic condition. Good Luck. The ice massage is kind of a PITA but its works or your money back.
