Fish finder question

Is it ok to run your fish finder out of water?  I got a new Humminbird 386ci and want to set up and go through all the menus.  So is it ok to run the unit without the transducer being in water?  For some reason I remember hearing a long time ago not to turn one on without the transducer in the water.

To the best of my knowledge it is ok. 

I've heard its ok, but for extended periods of time put it in simulator mode. It just turns off the transducer, The GPS should work fine.

When you first turn it on hit menu and it will let you put in simulation mode. You can do all of your adjusting there and it will save for on the water.
