I am having 2 big redwood trees removed from my yard and was wondering if any of you know what I can do with the logs.  I have heard that some people will take the logs and mill them or use it to make furniture, etc.  The trees are about 24-30 in in diameter.  Any ideas?

Thanks

Jody

They may or may not be valuable, and the professional who cuts them is the first to ask if they are worth something.  I've heard many tales of the cutter doing the cutting for free if he can have the wood - you may have something worth more than the price of cutting, or not.

Good luck.   :smt001

Here in SC we have a couple of guys who operate portable mills. They come to the site & mill the tree to spec. I know sometimes longboard builders seek out the big slabs for traditional olos.

If you're just looking to maybe get rid of the logs, I could potentially take a section about 30"long from the ~20-24" wide parts. And/or it'd be nice to get a chunk a little over 1' long from a part that's about 16" wide. Going to try my hand at making drums (taiko).

My tree guy says  it is probably pretty good wood.  The trees are close to buildings, so they have to be taken down in pieces.  I'd love to get some money out of it, but to fellow NCKA'ers the stuff is free for your projects.  I'll  keep you posted as to when the trees come down, hopefully in the next 2 weeks.

Redwood is what the coastal Indians use to cure and dry their salmon....

I made this bench from a cedar tree we had removed.

The sides are the stump split up the middle with grooves cut for the slabs.  The slabs are live-edge and 6' long.  Took about 3 or 4 hours with a chainsaw to cut, then another 3 or 4 hours with an orbital sander to finish.  I coated it in a marine spar varnish.

See the notch on the back of the end piece?  That's a hand hold so I can pick up and move the end.  The slabs slide into place.  No fasteners.  Just place the side stump halves, slide in the seat and back slabs and your done!

Another view; see the little shelf on the side piece?  That's to set my beer down on!!

Hey Jody, I'd love to get a 3' section from you if possible.  I'm right next door in San Ramon.

I  wouldn't remove them except one is causing damage to my house and the other lost its top in a windstorm this winter.  I still have 5 others in the yard...

I have 55 redwoods in my yard ranging from 35" across down to 6" across.  Fortunately, none of them are causing direct damage to my house, although I have a fair amount of redwood duff everywhere!

man, yeah. I wish redwood duff was worth something! :smt044
I've had a few small trees of 10" or so dropped, and I managed to find uses for all the pieces, mostly posts for garden fence.

Skipro, that bench is badass!

My neighbor just paid a premium for rough cut red wood. It wasn't all that red either the slabs are about 18 inches wide and 8 ft long 3 inches thick. Call your local mill and see what the charge for a slab of wood and how long they can slab pieces.

OK.  The trees are coming out this weekend.  Anyone who wants some of this wood for furniture, drums, etc. let me know.  It would be helpful to know what dimensions you want the logs to be.  Length, diameter, so I can have the faller cut the logs the right size.

Thanks!
