I need to get a fishing net, what are the pros/cons of having a short vs long handle for the net?

Thanks

In terms of helping land that big fish, bigger is better but it's also more expensive and harder to deal with (mostly for storage) on a kayak.

The law requires you to have at least an 18 inch diameter net with you at all times while fishing the ocean.

This is the one I have and it seems to do a decent job for me.

I have the Promar net that Mooch linked to... I likey!  Also works great for netting live bait at Lake Mendocino.

Did anyone ever give the Hibernet a try?  Sean, weren't you going to stock these?

Hi all,

I think short handle with large deep net. I tend to want to play my fish a lot more whien I'm in the yak to tire them out so they aren't hard to handle on board. I had a 25 lb salmon once that was too big for the net. I got it but it was a supreme effort, trying to hold the net down on the fish while trying to find a place for my pole.

Anyway, getting back to the short handle, I don't thing handle length is critical to anything, unless you like to chase your fish around with net while it is still fighting hard.

Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

A Steelhead always knows where he is going, but a Man seldom does.

I use the same Promar collapsible net as Mooch, except in the larger size - nearly 36" deep.

LN-704 Collapsible landing net - large - 28"x30" net frame, 26-55" telescopic handle

It's huge, great for stowing while launching, and I think would surely and safely contain the largest salmon I'll ever hook... but can be a bit of a sail to fight in a stiff headwind!  (I am not yet so talented as to be able to open it one-handed while simultaneously landing a fish.)

Maybe Hook1 could get ahold of this.

The Stowmaster nets are pretty good not cheap but you shouldnt be cheap about the net anyway

The blue one has telescoping handle right about where you see the leash attached so you have the option if you want more length. I use it stretched out

18" is legal minimum but won't cut it if you have anything big on

Thanks for the input everyone.  I ended up picking up a very short handled net from the Fisherman's Warehouse.
