I just joined NCKA about a year ago. I'm interested in going salmon fishing. Can someone tell me what is the nearest town with a motel.

Welcome to your first post, Dogwood!   :smt001

Google "Shelter Cove California hotels".  Mario's Marina Hotel is literally walking distance to the launch (with wheels) and is likely the cheapest - Shelter Cove has many inns and higher end places due to being right on the water and it's an isolated community, so they have to charge enough to stay in business!

Maybe we'll see you there.

Getting excited!!! Lots of kayaks!

Eric-

Wondering what sizes of the Deep six divers I should get for the opener. Here's my plan for the opener:

Plan A: I'm going to try my Scotty lake troller with a 4-6 pound weight first...Scotty says they can be used for light salt water use...as long as the swells/current isnt too bad I think I have a chance to make this work. They rate these downriggers for up to 3 pounds...which probably means they'll handle more though the chance of a failure increases. I would be comfortable with a 4 pound weight on this downrigger.

Plan B: Troll with a drop weight.

Plan c: Use the deep six divers that you have on your 'how to catch a salmon' video. I've been shopping for these and have notice 2 or 3 different sizes. Which size should I get or do I need a few different ones to match the conditions? Dont know too much about this rig/setup and want to come to the cove totally prepared.

If you can think of any suggestions or tips, I'm all ears. I'd rather bring more tackle then I need then not be prepared.

Thanks man-
-Murf

Murf - Get either the biggest DS (size 2?) or a Double DeepSix.  They're $15 to $20, but hopefully your mainline won't break, so if you ever snag up or break off a fish you will only lose the flasher and hooks.  I run 25 pound mono mainline - 30 is a good idea this year as there are supposed to be more 4 year old fish swimming around out there.  Your downrigger will work fine, but there's quite a lot of reef in the trolling areas at the Cove, so something to watch out for.  Another option is a banana weight as your means of getting down.  The sinker releases are a great way to fish, but lots of pesky rockfish and lingcod will grab your offering at the Cove, so I don't recommend potentially sacrificing that much lead to the depths.  Once you get used to DeepSix it's a pretty great way to fish (but I like the torture of paddling 80% on one side against strong resistance for miles on end   :smt003)

Two weeks from tomorrow!   :smt007
