My Garmin 140 fish finder finally got dropped off by the UPS dude (my favorite visitor). I went to the local hardware store (Friedman's) and picked up the needed installation supplies. I couldn't find any Marine Goop, so I settled for the Plumbers Goop. I picked up some stainless steel bolts, washers, and nylon locking nuts to hold the FF on the yak, and I found a rubber bung plug to plug the hole for the wires.

I popped a hold in the top with my hole saw and forced the FF connector up from the hull. Next I drilled the holes for the FF base mount and installed it with the plumbers Goop. Next I prepared the rubber bung plug by drilling two holes for the wires and cutting slits from the side to the new holes. Then I cut a little grove on the plug so it would stay down once I popped it in the hole. Next I ran the wires inside the plug, added the Goop, and forced it into the hole. I Gooped the outside of the plug to assure there would be no leak.

Next I started on the pick-up. I prepared the surface on the hull and put down a generous amount of Goop for a good bond. I set the pick-up on the Goop and set a lead weight on top. I added a couple of dabs of Goop on the wire as it ran up to the FF. Next was the hard part, the wait.

This morning I hooked up the FF to a battery I had on the bench to make sure it worked. Like a charm! The next step is to pick-up a battery and connectors from Radio Shack this morning. I've got to get this complete for the rock fishing trip in Caspar tomorrow (South of Fort Bragg).

I'll post the battery photo's later today.

(I added a before and after photo of the plug)

Ok, went down to Radio Shack and picked up a 12v battery and some connectors. Then I hit Albertson's for the plastic container to hold the battery.

I drilled a little hole on the side of the box to feed the wires through, then sealed it up with more Goop. I soldered the female ends on the wire and pushed them on the battery. I soldered the other end of the pigtail to the FF wires and sealed it with heat shrink tube.

Here is what it looks like. Battery was $28.00 and the container was $6.00.

How did this battery install end up working? Someone gave me a Garmin 140 and I am debating the install.
