Looking to head up to Almanor for a day trip this Saturday (3/9), anyone interested?.  Plan to leave Redding about 530am and get up there around 7.  Weather looks good, this cold front should be out by Friday with Saturday looking sunny and a high of 50.  Clayman, what's your beverage of choice?  :smt002

Do you foresee any issue with Hwy 36? If it snows, does it require chain?
FishingAddict and I are planning to come up Saturday, but only if the road condition allows.

thx,
ernest

My brother will be up here this weekend, and quoting him, "All I want to do is fish." So this is good timing  :smt003.

Ernest, I can't say for certain how much snow this system is going to pump out, but usually the only section on Hwy 36 that requires chains is around Morgan Summit.  The snow level's supposed to be above 5000 feet so that's where it would happen.  But this seems to be a relativel warm system, so if you guys come up Friday afternoon you might be fine.  An alternative would be to take Hwy 99 to Chico, then Hwy 32 up to Hwy 36.  That road doesn't go as high in elevation as Hwy 36.  I'll give you weather  updates as often as I can.

Ben - I'm an IPA kind of guy  :smt004.  Looking forward to fishing with you again!

Got the green light from the war department. Lets keep an eye on the weather see what happens. I can grab the shop trailer that holds 4 kayaks if we need it.

Could these be the humble beginnings of a Lake Almanor Get-Together?  :smt003

Let's hope we can get on some fish this weekend!  I'll think of a good place for us to launch and let y'all know what I come up with.  Easiest places would be either Prattville or Canyon Dam.  If we launch from Prattville, it's a 1-mile paddle west to the Peninsula and Rec 2 in case the bite in Prattville isn't happening.

Damnit! I need to borrow a rack or something cause this weekend would work good for me too.  Its time for me to get into gear for kayak wars and maybe AOTY.

In that case I might bring the AI instead. Forecast calls for 11kt wind. From Google Maps, the distance between Prattville and Rec 2 looks more like 2 miles. And yes, I'll bring you some IPA as well. Hopefully we'll have some time for a quick bbq afterwards.

I'm in...can't wait to try out the fish finder. I was up a few weeks ago and launched at the dam's boat launch, everything else seemed to be frozen...Is there a rally point to launch at?

Ernest,

Forecast is only 6 to 8 mph on Sat.  You might be pedaling more than sailing.  I am bringing the Revo.  3 Blue Revo's on the fleet!!

I was thinking about renting a lakeside cabin.  Is the Big Cove area a good home base to launch from?

Big Cove would put you well within reach of the A-Frame and Rec 1, located along the eastern side of the peninsula.  If you were willing to paddle a bit, you could also reach Big Springs and the mouth of Hamilton Branch in the northeast end of the lake.  The fishing within Big Cove itself can also be good at times.
