reminds me of the preliminary heats for the Surf kayak competition here in Santa Cruz  'round about 2002 or so.
Dudes were walking up to the parking lot at Manresa with their legs bleeding and their boats in pieces. (it was a day with what seemed to be 7-8ft faces)

I was a spectator and it was awesome to watch.

Looks like fun to me.
