So we spent a day on the water yesterday fished rio vista from Sandy beach to a few miles past prospect up towards cache. Eel, grass, ghost, roe & store bought shrimp. Pro cure was used here & there. No bites tugs pull downs or even weed hanging on line to mistake for a nibble lol. We had the fish finder set like my friend had it & that wasn't working started tweaking with it a bit but never saw the fish arches. Fish ID off nothing, ID on a **** load of "fish" prolly debris. Turned it off goofed a bit with chart speed & sensitivity from clutter to no clutter. I'm a noob when it comes to FF but considered this model & now that my friend owns it I'd like to help him tune it for Dino's. It will than get me ready for mine lol thanks guys any info would be great. And yes I searched a bit before posting :)

I don't have experience with sturgeon fishing the delta, but i would think that keying on certain bottom/structure variations like pits, holes, snags and channels would be more important than marking arches. I dunno though...

Yea I know what you mean as far as structure but I was told you could see Dino's with at least this model FF being its 200hz, If i find a hole and there's no Dino's in it I wouldn't want to drop anchor there I'm guessing. When I bank fish I stay in one spot and they come to me. I have a great bank spot but I want to find them when were on my friends boat. I plan on buying a Yak that's why I'm concerned about this one working good on his boat so I can find tune mine when I get it.

Have you ever been able to get arches?  How is the transducer mounted?  Did you adjust the sensitivity?  I may be able to make some suggestions but I will need to know a few things first.

I caught a ton of Sturgeon last year and never marked a single one on my FF. It sounds like you've got a grip on where to locate them, I say just keep doing that, don't rely on the electronics for Sturgeon.

well its my buddy's boat, I goofed with the sensitivity but never saw arches. By the time we got back to the dock it was dark. But I was planning on checking it or having him make sure it was like on the instructions. All post more info when I go back out again. It's not a huge boat says 6 people max there was 4 if us in it so the angle of it may have been off if that matters

yea I have a few spots where I go that are promising from the bank. But this boat thing & FF a whole new ball game for me lol yea I guess I should stick to what I'm good at bank fishing & leave the technology to those that know how to use it. I did like the depth part that's sweet:)

The angle of the transducer will have a lot to do with its ability to show fish/arches.  Often times, on a boat, they get knocked off angle.

I have the x-4 as well and for some reason I never get good readings when I am in the delta. Thought it was just me. I mainly just use it for depth, but I always hear of the sturgeon guys motoring around all day looking for arches.

And the stupid fish Id was driving us nuts showing fish like crazy not knowing it was debris logs and crap in the water. Turned it off but no arches. All post a pic of how he mounted the transducer

Find the structure you think the sturgeon will be relating to during the tide you are fishing.
Anchor upcurrent from it
turn fishfinder off
catch sturgeon

that is usually how I go about it.
