thats my local bait shop " B & S Bait n tackle" at mcavoys. I had visions of running that shop , i even had ideas to run a kayak rental out of it due to having all types of sloughs to safely paddle around.

tons of inventory , good stuff too like super seekers , avet reels & tons of other popular gear for nor cal. I would name it  " BAIT N BEER TACKLE SHOP" hahaha

They're asking 135K and indicate annual gross revenue of 261K.  The price includes 40K in inventory and an extra 10,000 sq. ft. Of space for boat or engine repair.  It's a great store if your fishing out of McAvoy's harbor but not exactly a Main and Main location.  Hopefully someone will buy it and continue its operation.  It's nice to be able to get live bait and tackle right at the marina.

The only tough part with owning that type of business......is that you would always be running the store instead of getting to go out fishing  :smt013. You'd get to hear everyone's stories but never get to talk about your own because you're behind the counter instead of being out on the water, haha.

The listing does say that it is absentee run or semi-absentee run.  Doesn't that mean that the owner is not always there?

Fish N' Brew, the listing I see states $348K in annual revenue.  Where are you seeing $261K in gross revenue?  Either way, that doesn't seem like a lot.  With thin margins in the bait and tackle business coupled with operating expenses, I can't imagine much income at the end of the day.  I dunno ...

My mistake on the revenue Allen.  I think the biggest problem is the slow turn with most of the inventory.  I doubt that the "true gross margins" are much more than 35 - 40% at best and I'm sure there's a lot of shrink associated with live bait.  By the time the expenses are paid, I don't see much opportunity for income commensurate with the amount of time one would have to spend running the place.  Even with the low cost of money these days, a slow moving inventory can quickly eat into the profits.  It's too bad this type of business has such a difficult time with success considering the lack of retail outlets available for us to buy our fishing needs.  The competition from the Walmarts of the world and online retailers make this a very tough proposition.  I spent 34 years with the dominant retail drug chain in Northern California and in the end, we just couldn't compete effectively against the larger national chains and ended up being purchased by CVS.  The bigger retailers continue to grow and the smaller independents are rapidly vanishing in all segments of retail.

Educate me Martin.  How slow is slow turn with most of the inventory?  And how does that eat into the profits?  And what do you mean by "shrink"?  I really have no idea of retail issues.  But I do think even 35-40% GM is likely high.

I'm not the expert but based on price and revenue I assume that income should be about 20-30% from revenue (o yes, do not forgot taxes).
I think this business would have more revenue if boat/engine repair shop was running.

I just threw it out there to the group. The MLS sysytems in Cali are going through growing pains and division. From what I gather This place is in one of my dead zones and I just happened to catch it on a subscription service. I'll research it some when I get a minute. It's been crazy up here.
