Ordered my Lowrance elite 4 gps combo.  Going to be an awesome upgrade.  I went with the non-dsi model, didn't want to learn something new, and figured I didn't want to deal with the potential depth limitations. Not to mention, my current transducer will be good to go, so install will be a breeze.

Any tips aside from plugging/protecting the card slot and aux. port on the back?

For my Aux In port I just use dielectric grease.  The Micro SD port flap should be fine as long as you make sure it's snugged.  But I've heard some folks using goop instead of the flap for the SD port.  I don't use goop for some of the inland water doesn't show up with my gold card.

I figure I can find some sort of cap for the port at the hardware store and then silicone it into place... may add a little silicone to reinforce the flap as well, that way it isn't permanent.

speaking of the gold card... I didn't buy that version.  How is the base map?  I'm sure it is very basic, but for just getting around and marking waypoints for fishing, I figured it would work well enough.

The Windsor Home Depot will hopefully have the little grey cap to cover the aux temp port. They also have the dielectic/Noalox grease for the plug pins. I used some black 10 or 20ml tape, the kind black iron pipe is wrapped with, to hold the SD card slot shut. I also bought a good quality 'invisible shield' screen protector at Best Buy.

The base map is very basic but still shows a few detail items like some buoys in the ocean & some lake & ocean contour depths too. I like not having too much on the screen. By the time you mark a bunch of waypoints & run a bunch of trails around those pts that little screen gets overloaded as it is especially when run in split gps/FF screen mode. There are some setup preferences that I've come to use like split screen down the middle vertically, only display speed & temp when I really need them to maximize screen space, etc.

What's really cool is having to turn the screen brightness down for night ops. It's that bright!

i filled a port with Dielectric on my FF 7 years ago... and it is still there...no melting away, and i always spray it down after salt trips.

Dude!
I got the Elite 4 GPS non-dsi last week! I went with the non-dsi because my transducer is permanently gooped inside the hull...so it would be an easy swap of head units, right? WRONG! The transducer that worked on my old Lowrance x67 DOES NOT work on my new Elite 4. And I bought a bundle package that didn't include a transducer...D'OH!
The gps is sweet. And I got the Navionics gold bundle. So I could see how fast I was pedaling last wknd...but I couldn't see any fish. I couldn't even get it to do split-screen; only gps mode. BTW I can sustain 6mph in the Revo for about 5min.
So now I need to figure out which transducer to get.

Hmmm... well, at least I got the bundle with the transducer, as my plan was to move the old unit to my second yak.  The plug in is the same style, so I was assuming it would work.  If not, it is not the end of the world, I have a home made scupper mount for my transducer, so I could move the whole assembly to yak #2.  I will just have some work to do before I can plug in the new one if it doesn't work.  They both use the 83/200 dual beam transducer... we shall see.

So I just did some quick research and found out your problem... The X67 used a single beam 200kHz skimmer.

My current FF is the X50-DS which uses what should be the correct skimmer.

Hey man, thanks for looking that up for me! Muchas gracias. So now I just need to find an 83/200kHz transducer to install. And I guess the good news is that now my buddy gets a free hand-me-down FF and transducer (instead of just the FF)...in case you're lurking Tozuko!  :smt044

I ran/tested the Elite 4 late last year and really liked the unit.  Just did a formal install of it on a West Marine Ponpano 120 with a ram mount.  Last thing to finish is the foam in-hull transducer block.  Eager to test the DSI version quite soon.

I remember some of the threads that you mentioned that in... thats how I know about the waterproofing issues.  Looking forward to it for sure.  The color and increased resolution are going to be huge.  Not to mention the ability to waypoint strikes when trolling.  My current unit (x50-ds) is just a glorified depth finder.
