Well, it's done, but what the guy did is just plain illegal.  485 PC.  Misappropriation of lost property.  The cops could have been called, but paying him off was probably faster and easier.

"To establish a salvage claim for compensation and award, a person must demonstrate (1) that he has rendered aid to a distressed ship or its cargo in navigable waters; (2) that the service was voluntarily rendered without any preexisting obligation arising from contract or otherwise to the distressed ship or property; and (3) that the service was useful by effecting salvage of the ship or its cargo, in whole or in part."  R.M.S. Titanic, Inc. v. Haver, 171 F.3d 943, 963 (C.A.4 (Va.),1999)

As a skeptic, I say Mr. Stickyfingers recovered the pot in shallow, non-navigable water, taking this out of salvage/admiralty jurisdiction.
Ma, git my pitchfork - and a rope!!  :jerk:

If you recover my wallet from under the ocean you deserve the cash.

Glen and Craig, I am glad it all worked out!

The guy probably figured that someone would pay to get their trap back. Who knows, maybe he saw us all out there and knew to go out and look after we were gone.....

People who truly "find" valuable things typically don't turn around and say "since I found it, you need to give me $".....at least not the honest and good people (in my not-so-humble-opinion).

Most people who find something, see it belongs to someone, and do the right thing and call. It's called paying it forward (doing something for someone knowing that you would hope someone would do the same for you).

This makes me think this guy has done this before, shoot, it could be a side business for him this time of year! Sounded like he knew exactly how much to ask for...not too much, not too little. Bad manners AND bad karma.

I'm sorry that happened - I wonder if any other lost pots will be recovered by the same dude? It would be very interesting to see if anyone else gets any calls....

While that exact same thought had crossed my mind too, I would still like to believe that this guy had honorable intentions when he recovered the trap.

For a long time, I was always a believing the worst in people and all they cared about is getting there own; however, since joining NCKA 3 years ago and meeting folks like Sonny and others (who risk his safety for another), those they help raised money for our brothers in time of need (Craig with the Albion Raffles, Big Jim with the PIF raffles, Victor with the Crabfest raffle, etc) and those here that just give to a cause out of the kindness of there heart, I realized that my initial mentality could be wrong.

And, I still want to believe that there is good in people, as long as I am an NCKA'er...... and thank you all for making me a better person!
