You are guys are accusing him of theft. Thats pretty strong. He wants compensation for his labors as far as I can tell. He came off a bit coarse I would say but he's 65 years old. He also claims to have got the lines wrapped on his leg too. I have a meeting with him in the AM regardless of Glens wants or needs. We will see how it plays out.

Craig, so he is a 65 year old surfer ? At Doran? The only tiny lil waves there I thought were no where near the crabbing grounds.
I could be totally mistaken.

As for folks wanting to roll him for the traps , yikes. Call the Sherrif and have him meet you at the pickup.

At this point and time, I choice not to accuse anyone without evidence of wrong doing; I would hope that there are others in the world (that are like NCKA'rs) who would go out of there way to help another.

Spoke with Craig over the phone toady and he will handle the situation according to his best judgement; hopefully he can resolve this issue in a manner that would be beneficial to both parties.

Thanks Craig for taking care of this for me; call me after and will work out arrangements thru our Dustin! (and Thanks Dustin for offering to bring it down; either way, I'll bring you a dozen agents!!!

I didn't think the guys a thief just an uncool dude.  No doubt it was a pita paddling 3 traps and 150' of rope back to shore but I'd say most watermen would be stoked to be able to help return lost equipment.

IMO, doing our thing in the ocean, a certain amount of loss is to be expected.  Glen admitted the traps were unweighted.

Seems to me finders keepers is the rule when stuff washes ashore or is salvaged, so no laws were broken, (assuming the story is true).   At least he had the courtesy to call.

Not to say I don't think the guy is a jerk for asking for cash.

I just found your wallet but took all the money out of it.

Same thing. Not cool at all.

Well no offense to EricB but the finders keepers thing is BS. If you found something that had no identifying info on it then fine, keep it. But when you find something that had somebody's contact info on it, return it! If your hard up, let it be known and hope for a reward. From my perspective he did not have to recover the trap but once he did he had a social and maybe legal obligation to return it.

If you recover my wallet from under the ocean you deserve the cash.

Sounds to me like the dude is saying he wants a reward for the trouble.  I have no real problem with that.  However, I've lost a few things in the past that have gotten returned by cool folks and they were rewarded, some with beer and others with some greenbacks.  Where the dude goes wrong in my book is demanding cash up front for someone else's stuff.  Dude should just keep it if he's gonna be a dick about it.  Somewhat symbolizes what appears to be wrong with a lotta folks these days.  I know a lotta folks are hard up these days, but would be nice if more of us took care of one another.  Little things I suppose.

Interested to know how it turns out.

Glen, you know I love ya and hope you get your stuff back free of charge.

However, according to maritime law the old bastard may not be that out of line.  He's just following ancient tradition:

no pitchforks here...only tridents.   :smt044

But you guys are right, he did have to go through all that trouble to retrieve those pots and that is hard work.  But I would never figure someone going through all that trouble for an actual monetary reward other than feeling good about helping someone out when they had the opportunity to do so.

I guess he doesn't see it the same way some of us do and that's all gravy.

If he asked for fish as a reward he would have had to get a bigger freezer. Doh!
