Ok, ocean looks no bueno for me right now, so I figured I'd try out trout fishing from the yak. The entirety of my trout fishing experience has been on small creeks with flies or single salmon eggs. Just trying to figure out if I missed anything:
landing net
(2) J5's (firetiger and silver)
(1) SC chub in firetiger-like pattern
couple different kastmasters 1/4oz-1/16oz
Asst grubs with leadheads and baitholders just to try (or try for panfish?)
Also have some snapswivels and splitshot.

Running it all on a custom 8'6" ultralight rod rated for 2-6lb line.
Reel is a Shimano TX1000FA spooled with new 4lb line.

Am I missing anything? Any tips on technique- just let out ~60' line and go for slow S patterns? Any suggested areas? I know some guys have been throwing J7's with good results, but didn't feel like my setup could handle them. Did I screw up? Thanks!

Also- can anyone confirm they don't do inspections there?

That's a very good start!  Hope it goes well for you.

And your set-up will handle J-7s.

No inspection but the fees are there.cartop 3$ I think 5 for parking another 4or5 for permit.iwas there on fri and the most action was as you come out of the boat launch in front and to the right all the way to the back and back out.like a huge oval.i covered the whole lake but all my bites and the other boats that I saw came from that area.youll see where the hot spots are cause all the boat traffic will be there.th fish that I mark was deep 15to30fow good luck  :smt006 also bring some swivels and egg sinkers so you can get deeper.
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

From the launch paddle towards that far "cove" and hang a left just before it to start cruising past the "cliffs".  There are various drop offs all along there and that is where I've caught all my biggun fish there, usually between 4-6#.  They are available elsewhere in the lake, but by far that's where I've had my best success.  Also add some pro-cure scent to the equation.  I have no idea if it really works, but it just seems when I don't use it, they don't bite as much.  You're also going to want to watch your line as you troll around.  If you're there on a weekend, there can be a literal shitton of folks on the water in that tiny lake, yakkers and power boaters, and you gotta remember where your line is and try to avoid tangling yourself and others.  Not to mention the shore folk who all think that you're going to take their lines and will routinely mean mug and/or yell at you.  You can catch some big fish there though and I prefer going on a day off midweek.

Given the price and the size of the lake,...I can't wait for San Pablo Reservoir to open up again - Feb 8.
