Ran 25 miles on my Tacoma after the gas light came on.  Don't want to push my luck since the next gas station is about 15 miles ahead!

Haha! I don't take chances with my diesel! When the light comes on I'm looking for the first place to refuel.

My trucks fuel tank is 34 gal. The idiot fuel light comes on just about 1/8th tank left, and when I fill up, tank usually only takes 24 gal, so, the idiot light comes on when when there is 10 gal left.  I've never pushed it with the idiot light on though, but I should easily get 150 miles of 190 expected.  When I fill up, I typically have 460-490 miles on trip odo.

Simple Math=
1...it depends on how many gallons are in the tank when the light goes on.

2...then multiply that by how many gallons per mile your car gets.

my lil' CRV holds 15gals. the light goes on when there is 3gals. to go. I've gone over 60miles with that light on. i like to push the envelope. :smt009

Totally depends on the car, and they all vary, even within specific models.  One of my cars I drove 80 miles after the light came on, and still had a gallon to spare.  My friend had a car that once the light came on, you better be within a mile of the gas station or your are hoofing it the rest of the way.

My old Mitsubishi Truck when the light came on you had about 10 more seconds of the engine running before you were done.  I hated that!  Nissan trucks (Frontiers) are a little better but not by much.  I beeline to nearest gas station the second it comes on.

That was good Jim! I ran on fumes on the Suby as long as you had pressure vapors or fuel it would still go. It had a 14.2 gallon tank and I remember once I filled up way below the slash with it running and it took over 15 gallons. I thought man the fuel line and fuel filter must have been empty! I have a jeep now and that light comes on at a 1/4 tank left could go forever!

I have run the corolla down to empy once coming home through 80, the digital reading said I had 0 miles to go. Its said that for almost 15 minutes. I don't know how accuarate those reading are. After that event, I try not to push it. I though I was going to be stuck on the ramp by the IKEA.

I had an old '62 Chebby truck once.

The tank was so dirty that I had to bend the pick-up tube in the tank to keep from plugging it. It'd run out 1/4 tank..
Piss my buddys off when they borrowed it to go out in the forest for a load of wood or for moving day and think they would'nt have to put any gas in it.   :smt003

Never did get around to pulling the tank for a cleaning....
