Its good to hear from you John.  Sounds like life is good after FW.  Keep us informed on when you get your PA and we'll hook up.

This is either Steve, Brian, or John haha.

Hey man welcome and great to see you posting your work on this site! As a big time lurker in the BD rod building forum I can say without a doubt that your rod building is unreal. Also enjoy your willingness to post tutorials and help the FE's like myself. Are you still doing the FW classes? If not any chance we could get you to do one on the basics if there is enough interest? I currently am a black on black w/ the fish sticker kinda guy.

Also careful yaks are like rods one's never enough. :smt003

Hey man! Thanks for the kind words.  I would love to help you guys build some rods and/or gaffs.  If there is enough interest, I would happily teach a class on it.  Additionally, since I'm not a yak fisherman yet, I would like to learn from you guys what isn't offered in the world of fishing rods that will fit the niches that are found in this sport. One thing I have certainly noticed in videos is that most rod butts are much too long to fight a bigger fish effectively while sitting down.  It looks cumbersome as all hell.

I was also thinking of incorporating this behind the Reelseat on a rod meant for kayak fishing so you can attach a leash easily.  AR15 shooters will recognize this and luckily, they only cost a few bucks.

That is a killer idea!
Would be way better than wrapping a leash around your rod!

Dude the sling attachment on that receiver end plate would be money for a leash. When I tried leashes the biggest problem for me was keeping them away from the reel handle when reeling. Many guys here just take them off when the rod is in use so that isn't an issue for them.

I'm a rod float guy myself and there is a company that makes a floating rod for yak fishing. Not sure if they fill the blank w/ foam or what but I am dying to learn how they did it without the external floatation. Also not sure if the fore mentioned rod would float with a 16oz jig and an avet mxl because they seemed to be targeting the Florida guys and their style of light gear fishing. They used all Amtak components and what looked like eva for the grips.

Grip length is one of the reasons I started assembling custom rods. I build them all typically the same salty or fresh with about a 12" finished rear grip that goes just about to the end of my elbow when holding the rod under the reel seat. Just enough for some decent leverage and still easy to maneuver around.

Can wait to see what you come up with for yak fishing and I am very interested in a rod building class.

Most of us get the long butt handle so when ur fighting fish from a kayak u can tuck the rod under ur holding arm to add un fatiging leverage

Are you talking about Overboard Fishing Rods?  I had the opportunity to use one of their rods last week for striper fishing.  They just use oversized grips (fatter).  It's a nice rod.  They do have some models that seem like they will work out here.  I talked to the guys there, they seem like they would be willing to build different models for us if their current models don't satisfy our needs.

Ill get on one this week.  What forum should I post it in polepole?  Also, I see you're on the OTI pro staff, the chartreuse rod in my OP is an OTI 200gm.  Brice is a great guy.

Put it in the "Craftsmen's Corner" board.

How about an image of a Sailfish?  :smt001
why a sailfish?  :smt005
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

I'd like to see some rods (both casting and spinning) with SHORTER butts for kayak fishing. If you are actively working a lure and casting repeatedly (not vertical jigging), that butt gets in the way big time because you're hunched-over & sitting down. So if I plan to chuck reaction lures all day, I bring my rods w/the shortest butts possible.

Welcome aboard, Scold.  Hope your stay here is enjoyable.

Just received my initial package from Mudhole this afternoon, so fair warning, I may be blowing up your PM soon with all sorts of n00b building questions.

Hey Steve!! Good to hear from you.  I miss bustin your guys' chops on a regular basis haha.  Bungle, feel free to PM me anytime if you have some questions.  If you are going to be using foam grips (either EVA or hypalon) use the method outlined in this video:

Also, I don't have any pics of gaffs that I've made.  They are super easy to make though.
