We were thinking today that something was up with Mavericks when we saw a bunch of jetski's lined up on the beach at HMB Kayak Co.  But it was hard to fathom with the 2 foot swell today.

Yikes! Just read NOAA and the PacifcWaverider reports. Calling for flat conditions. Must be a mistake. Something is wrong. It needs a storm from a few days back. And needs to hump up for a few days. Anybody else see something different? Ron

Stormsurf is reporting that a big swell of 16ft is coming starting Saturday. They've numbered it #1 for this winter & they don't issue swells a number unless they are pretty big & powerful. Of course it would have to come the weekend I'll be in the Mojave.  :smt005

MagicSeaWeed surf forecast says 8-13 ft swell; tournament director Jeff Clark said contestants will paddle out Sunday in magical conditions: 30-foot waves breaking under sunny skies, with little to no crosswinds.

"The waves are on the way," Clark said. "Great waves."

That being said there seems to be some skepticism about conditions among those I would expect to know.

From NOAA......

" A STRONG PACIFIC STORM CURRENTLY POSITIONED NEAR THE WESTERN ALEUTIANS IS GENERATING LARGE...VERY LONG PERIOD SWELL. THIS VERY LONG PERIOD SWELL WILL BEGIN TO ENTER THE COASTAL WATERS LATE FRIDAY AFTERNOON. THESE LONG PERIOD WAVES WILL CREATE A SIGNIFICANT SHOALING HAZARD AS THEY MOVE THROUGH THE WATERS."

Definitely not going to be like 20ft @ 25 seconds kinda big...... but with no wind or wind chop there could be some higher performance riding instead of just the 'big drop' & race to the shoulder.

Yep...you guys are right, its on! But I wonder if it will be small...and Jeff Clark feels it may be a small winter for waves. He knows a lot more about what is coming up for the rest of the winter. It seems in past it would call for 20 or 25 feet at Half Moon Bay for show time. Lets hope it humps up.

It's a pretty significant west swell. With long periods expected. Sometimes the direction matters more than the size*

NOAA radio says 5', 25 seconds. Coming in on Friday. Looks like saturday will be a good practice day for the big wave guys and also for anybody to check out the seen. I'll be surfing in Bolinas.
Not advisable for novices, but saturday may also be a good time to paddle out and hang with the photographers boats. Just have to  avoid sets when exposed over shallow spots.

I was dubious as well, but it sounds like the predictions for actual swell are shaping up nicely.

just read that the organizers are also counting on some sneaker waves to make things interesting.
Topside weather forecast couldn't be better.
