Hey, you do what you can, when you can. You didn't create their situation, and you aren't solely responsible for fixing it. But you did do something to improve it.

You can easily judge the character of a man by how he treats those who can do nothing for him.

Way to go Mr Matt! I gave away a sleeping bag the other day. Didn't think about the soup. Some are just young kids I wonder what lead to their homelessness. I got to thinking of writing a book about the homeless. just havent figured out how to ask what needs to be asked. I'd like some personal stories so people can under stand them . plus so young people might learn form someones mistakes.

As I walked to the SJC terminal from parking lot this morning at 0550, I thought "GD its cold wouldn't last a night in these conditions."  So many must, and therefore they do.

That was a pretty bad ass move, Matt.  Good example of true suffering, and the things that can be done to alleviate it on an interpersonal/micro level.  putting sympathy to action = above and beyond

(BTW, how the F do keep the thermo set to 72?!  I'm parboiled trying to sleep in a 65 degree bedroom)

You got me thinking and posted this on facebook

" It is cold outside. There is a lot people real cold outside, find some stuff that you do not longer wear and take it to Christian Help Center on Sacramento St, you may save a life and make someone feel better tomorrow and your heart will feel warmer too."

I received many responses and the manager of the office put it in the inter office message and many of them are bringing blankets and jackets tomorrow to help people. and sharing it on facebook to do the same.

Thanks for the inspiration.

Right on, Matt and Luis.

I've found that another thing the homeless folks really appreciate is clean socks.

You can't live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you. -

You've had that day, and without meeting you I imagine many in the past and more to come,

Thanks for the post and reminder for us all.

I have mixed emotions on this issue.  A few years ago I helped a homeless guy in Florida, he worked at a go cart track I worked after school.  Boss advanced him the cash, we got him a tent and prepaid  a local campground for a camp sight, that had showers and stuff.  Got him an old bike so he could ride to work.  A co worker gives him a ride home, bike falls out of truck and some one stops and picks it up and takes off with it.  He leaves the campground never to be seen again.  Guess he wasn't ready.  I also went to shelters in San Jose and other places with the VA and some people there are truely in need, some have MH issues, and some are just dirt bags.  I met one woman I swear to God, I thought she was going all Lizzy Borden on me and was getting ready for the hatchet.  She scared the crap out of me.

Thanks very much Dale.

Squidder, I hear you on that. Two years ago when I moved to Sac I took a year off just to fish and do volunteer work along the river.
N
Met many homeless folks, saw a ton of addiction issues along the way. Made friends with a vet named Craig, saw him daily for a month and supplied him with food and also first aid supplies. Then one day he was gone. No idea where he went, the others who "hung out " with him were unaware of his whereabouts.

I made a friend with that dude. Smoked on the riverbank with him, and even had a beer with him. We told "war" stories and such, just like you would any other friend.
For someone who served our country for 8 years in conflict zones to be living under a tree on the American River made me very mad.
Guess I can't turn a blind eye.

But also am aware there are folks who just aren't right for this world.
I delivered WonderBread in SF for 8 years and stopped one time to help a girl getting the crap beaten out of her by her whatever.
They were what we called the Park Kids. Looked like the kids from the Beyond Thunderdome movie  homeless Haight Ashburry types.
Anyways, pulled my truck over, grabbed dude, punched him in the throat and them turned and she was attacking me.

Crazy stuff. Still can't turn a blind eye.

Way to go Matt.
Where my girlfriend and I work in the City there are many homeless. Because we see them on a daily basis we get to see their habits. Our efforts go to helping a few. I have given money, clothing and food to those who have reached out in a positive way. I have been burned only a couple of times. My feeling is people out there need help and if I am able I will.

Strong work, Matt.

Even when factoring in getting burned, I much prefer helping out the needy directly over even the most reputable charitable organizations.
