They've been wrong before!  :smt002

With 192 anglers I wouldn't count on much being available, supply is pretty limited at the Cove and it's a long drive back to the next store.  BYOB!  :smt001

I can't remember, are showers free at the campground? Or do they take quarters?

According to NOAA, it's not that bad. Just a mixed-up short period swell that makes it borderline sketchy.

Last year free, but bring quarters just in case they changed things up

Easy, Guys and Gals - the forecast looks good for tourney day.  I wasn't just blowing smoke when I was ecstatic over the forecast!  Derrick's numbers look more likely to me than the general forecast.  I always want to know and consider the general forecast, because conditions that they call for can come nearshore any time, but really the 0 to 10 nautical miles forecast is telling you what to expect offshore.  Also, and this is key, the NWS has changed the way they provide their marine forecast - it's changed in the last year.  Here's the scoop:

They used to separate swells - the stuff generated a long way away and quite predictable - from wind waves - the stuff generated locally and much less predictable.  Now they combine the two, or if you see two different heights called for it's two different swells with wind on top of it.  The overall effect of this change is that they hope to provide a more reliable picture for mariners on the open ocean who may experience a 10 foot sea due to a 6' swell and 4' wind wave combined.  What I've seen firsthand this year is that this new forecasting protocol has caught people off guard.  At the Cove a month ago I was shocked to see it totally flat ass calm all around the point, through the Cove, and up along Abalone Point even!  The call had been for 8' at 8 seconds - if you saw the vid, it was rough, but it wasn't an eight foot swell - it was a 1 to 2 foot swell with wind on it - even I was caught off guard by this although I'd seen super flat on Stormsurf.  A good way to study it now is to use Stormsurf for your swell height and NWS for your wind trends, and to remember that wind may not affect nearshore.

Last point, and this is very key as well - the big N, or North wind, can come over the King Range and blow you toward the Whistle buoy when it's strong - not cool.  But NW, Northwest wind, comes down the coast and is partially blocked by Punta Gorda and the Cape to the north of that.  Days of NW wind at the Cove (like Saturday) usually start out with the whitecaps way outside, and they march in as the morning and early afternoon go by - sometimes not even making it to the beach at all and often staying outside the Whistle area.  Days of heavy North wind, like I said, can come over the mountains and be much more problematic, OR...  they can be completely blocked!

Bottom line, tourney day forecast looks very good to me, and I'd bet Sunday will offer fishing opportunities as well - at least to the very early boaters.

I've got the Schwag all packaged up - 3 different packaging sessions of about 3 hours each.  I've double checked everything and am excited to hand it out and see everybody.  Now it's time to get all the prizes, potluck, scoring and other tournament gear ready and then pack all my boating and other stuff.  I'm gonna be tired by the time I get to the Cove!  It's a good kind of tired though.  Can't wait.  Drive safely and watch each other's backs.   :smt001
