Well my wife prodded me to take on another idea! She planted the seed when our Forum was only 3 days old. You Know Women!!!..lol :smt005
Seriously though, she just wanted to see this new thing we put together, the "Sanitation workers alliance network" do something to give back to our local Communities. So I thought about it ,,hum ,,what could we do? I have a lot of homeless people I come into contact with, some are my friends out there. So they were on my Radar. :help:
All in all, within a short time of a week. I was able to get a use permit for the Town Clock and get a Santa Claus (coworker) :santa: and some candy canes etc etc. Next thing you know, we are having a Blanket Drive.

OK, here is the details...RAIN OR SHINE !

                              SATURDAY DEC, 22ND 2012

NEW BLANKET DRIVE FOR THE HOMELESS CENTER/SHELTER ON RIVER ST. IN SANTA CRUZ !

AT THE TOWN CLOCK on N. Pacific ave.

I WILL BE THERE FROM 10:30am UNTIL 1:30pm,  Santa Claus will make his appearance at 11am till 12:30pm.

Although I am asking for NEW blankets. I found out the Shelter will accept used CLEAN Blankets and  CLEAN Sleeping bags !

Hope some NCKA can stop by and say Hello ! or even have a blanket for a good cause. I know a lot of people have found themselves homeless or real close a time or two. So thanks for the support !

Sincerely,

Kimo, Gman

Thanks Eugene.
This guy was the lucky recipient of a nice heavy wool blanket. He was the only guy that came to us and asked for one that day. He was so thrilled with his new blanket,  that he even posed for the camera with Santa.
The rest of the haul went to the shelter. I was floored to see everyone huddled under the entryway sidewalk outside. They lined up behind the director of the shelter and each were given one blanket till they were gone. It was a heart wrenching site to see their desperate faces. It made me appreciate my life more and I can't wait to do another event like this again. I will plan it better and do it before the cold weather sets in.
The reason I chose to do this was because we have a bad problem with homeless sleeping around ...and sometimes IN our DUMPSTERS. I am hoping to work closer with the shelter to get the word out of this Dangerous situation. I have dumped a guy in my truck before, miraculously he was rescued before being crushed. The guy my fishing buddy and coworker dumped a few years ago, well he wasn't so lucky. It was a Friday and we had all gone home for the day, when I got a call that they found a body in my buddy's load of cardboard when they started pushing it to be bailed. It bother him so bad that he eventually went back to a residential Sanitation route. He helped out with the blanket drive, so I think it helped get it off his chest, so to speak.

Hope you all have a great Holiday !
