I'd be cool with 19 species.

Thanks for answering John. So, correct me if this is wrong but, I guess the committee is looking to lump smb/spots & then add either browns or carp to keep the total at 20?

What will the new smb/spot point value be? & again what would the point value be for carp & what points for browns? I think all of the contestants should know these things before they vote as the exact details will more than likely end up making a big impact.

Pat, so 20-1perch=19 LOL  :smt005

?

& since we're on the 'AOTY 2013' topic......I would like to see an 'AOTY participant/players forum' created & then those of us who do 'play the game' &  'love/hate the game' can chime in. Tired of hearing opinions from people who are too cheap to support NCKA with $40, too lazy to post up a few fish pics for AOTY, but they want to change & influence AOTY just the same.
Too cheap really? The only reason I cant participate in aoty is because I cant afford it .I have 2 young children to support and my wife lost her job because of AB109.If I had any extra money to support ncka believe me I would and maybe some how or some way I will be able to join in on on aoty in 13.....and as far as making a private section.. bad idea the aoty thread is what makes me wanna play

The goal that we set last year was to have a "trophy" size fish be worth about 200 pts across species/species groups, so that would give folks throughout NorCal a lot of options for competing and getting 10 good-scoring fish. We have not decided on values for 2013 yet but have discussed 9 pts/in for a pooled SMB/spot category - that would put 22-23" spots right around 200.  The current trout category is at 7.5 pts/in.  If we split the trout then both would be at 7.5-7.75 pts/in., which would put 25-26" trout right around 200.  We have not even discussed a score yet for carp - would need to do some checking on expected sizes.

Do carp really meet this definition?

6. Only fish that you can normally keep and eat (per CA DFG regulations) are eligible.

Do people normally keep an eat them?

Mike, I stand 100% by what I posted. My point is that the casual 'observers/spectators' should not be ENTITLED to shape the game. I won't bother explaining all the sacrifices that have been made in the pursuit of this crazy fishing game but the entry fee is a drop in the ocean.

I have to agree with salty... I havent partisipated in AOTY yet... cheep is a low shot though... partisipants shoud shape the game. Those that wish to join and play do it also for the prize and bragging rights.
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

If yall add carp its just another fish that isnt foundhere up north along with white sea bass and striper.  You might as well add sturgeon because I never here of any white sturgeon caught or targeted here.  We also dont have near the CA halibut fishery that yall have in the Bay Area.  Bring back the flounder!  I would have another 200pt fish this year.  Also add leopard shark if you want to add a species or squawfish if your set on a freshwater species.

AOTY favors NorthCentral Cali.... :smt003

Hi Ben,

Do a search on Carp recipes and see for yourself.  Just because some people don't eat Carp doesn't mean it's not edible.  I have friends who love to eat them and I do eat them occasionally.

I assumed you meant combining lmb and spots. I'd much rather see that than a smb/spot category. Because smb are badass fish and deserve their own category! Save the smallies, brother! :-)

I don't think we should put SMB and Spots together. It's not very hard to determine which is which. I enjoy targeting one or the other when I'm out. I fish completely different lakes for each species. Carp would be hard to find a common size to add a point value. Some lakes have tons of small to medium ones, and some lakes have 4 footers that can be targeted. If carp are added I plan on fishing for the 4' fish. More common is the 20-25" fish. Big Browns take quite a bit  of driving to find typically. Not too bad for me, but the coastal guys might complain.

SeaWeed, check out the link below. If you can get a few guys together it's another cool online fishing game & you can play it & AOTY simultaneously.

Some people eat carp; but some people eat bat rays too.  Doesn't mean it should be a AOTY fish.

Carp are not a gamefish in my opinion.

In fact, carp are an invasive species that are quite possibly the most destructive and disruptive fish in the freshwater lakes and rivers of California, with the possible exception of the Striped bass.   They should be treated the same way people treat squawfish.  As a football.

I also still don't get the complaints about Amador fish.  People have caught them since the inception of AOTY.  So they're planted. So what?  Most of the trout in CA were planted at some time or another.  There's no specific reason to hate a trout that was planted two weeks ago vs one that was planted 5 years ago and held over.  Wait 5 years and that 2 week planted trout can be the same holdover.

I may not compete as hard as I have in the past, but I might in the future.  I pay the fees every year and I think my opinion should matter as much as anyone else who pays the fees, even if i'm not an active competitor.
