Has anyone launched and fished by the north tower of the GG Bridge? There is a small harbor there by the coast guard station and i was thinking of jumpin in there and paddling towards angel island. what are the chances of landing fish there? i have never heard of people kayak fishing there. have you? any info is appreciated!

The Ft. Baker Launch is very easy as you can back your vehicle down the launch and unload all your stuff.

Keep an eye on the tide as it really rips through this section, so plan your fishin accordingly. IE, don't plan on fishing under the GG just before or during the outgoing or it'll be an uphill battle gettin back.

1) as you exit the cove, to your left all along the rockwall is productive fishing w/in casting range. If no one is fishing this area, I'll fish it, otherwise leave it to our landlocked brethren.

2) to the right you'll see 2 rock outcropping, fish this area for lings. Behind these rocks are submerged rocks (depending on the tide) which hide alot of fish. I'd only re comend Hobie craft here as the swells really push you around and you have to be maneuvering the entire time, especially w/ fish on.

3) directly under the GG (20'-30' from the N. Tower) and surrounding area you'll mark fish. You can fish this area only slack tide as all the water from the Bay or Ocean will be rushing through this area on either the incoming or outgoing. Use big scampis or swimbaits w/ 4-6oz heads to get to the bottom. If the current is moving a little, cast against the current so the bait falls directly under you w/ the current.

4) Just past the N. Tower is a great sandy halibut area, you'll see a little beach head.

Here's a plan:

On a day w/ minimal tidal movement.

1) On the outgoing, drift to all the spots mentioned, past the GG, the halibut grounds and work the inshore rocks for pot luck all the way to Pt. Bonita.

2) When the tide turns around head back.

Fishing under the GG is a blast, bring a camera and a buddy. It really is some of the most memorable fishing I've done and the view is spectacular. What's cool, is you'll always see a pic of the GG and you can actually show your friends where you launched and fish. (This really helps when you're stuck in the middle of the desert  :smt012)

I did a trip riding the tide out of the gate about 10 years ago, and the group launched from that little harbor at Ft Baker (is it a coast guard facility? I can't remember). I was the sweep paddler, so I was just there to keep an eye on stragglers. I did see 4-5 small sharks jumping for baitfish just outside of the gate, before we landed at the little beach Elric is talking about. I wasn't fishing, but the area looked fishy to me.

Ditto to everybodies comments.  EZ launch...HECTIC currents at times.  Bonita cove near the mouth of the gate is an excellent place for butts and WSB.

I would love to make that trip  :smt006.  Also a good spot for Salmon.  I remember reading an article by Craig Hanson in Pacific Coast Sportfishing about the rocks by the North Tower being a great spot to reach salmon from shore - before they closed off access to it in the name of Homeland Security  :smt013.  Sat 8/5 looks good with a 10:55am high of 4.1 and 2:25pm low of 3.5!
