Not lookin for a project but I've been doin it for 18 years. It's not that tough, you should give it a try. My favorite rod to fish is the first rod I built. Nothing fancy but it fishes really well.

It would be cool to try but im afraid its gonna look crappy. I want to get one of those rods with crazy prints. The other thing id rather pay someone to do it right the first time. Dont have the $$$ to experiment myself.

I'm not building right now, but I have a 700ML that I built a few years ago... Might have used it or taken it out with me a couple times... Would be willing to part with it if you want to consider that.

It's acid wrapped with Fuji Silicon Nitride II rings, holographic tiger wrap, aluminum reel seat, and NCKA Logo.

Here's a pic...

My buddy in Novato builds great rods and just did a few calstars for me. He does a great job. Let me know if interested.

Yeah, I'm interested! Can he do this kinda stuff?  I want to match up the rod to the saltiga blue.

Great choice IMHO. I have a 700ml that is my go-to for lingcod fishing.

I was just thinking...... I still like taking charter boats, most of the time in deeper water we're dropping 16oz, 24oz cannon balls over. Still going to get the 700ml but should I get a 700h or xh for that?

Heaviest I've used on the 700ml is 8 ounces, fishing a drift in about 80feet. 16 oz might be a bit on the heavy side?
Most of the time I am using 2-4 ounces with lingcod lures but i like being able to drift with about 6oz if necessary. If I need more than 6oz it is too rough for kayaking and I bag it.

Thats exactly what I mean, So the question would be should I pick up a Heavy or Extra Heavy? Dont have any experience with calstar yet.

I was fortunate enough to be able to borrow both the 700ml and I think an H to try them side by side and I found the 700H just a bit much for what I use. Great Bass 2 has experience with both, maybe send him a PM. For heavy weight like you mentioned I would guess the H would be best over the ML, but I don't have a lot of experience with the various calstars either, just the 700ml for my kayak setup.
Maybe check out MudHole.com, they have lots of specs on the various Calstar blanks and can be very helpful if you call them with your needs. They can even set you up with the guides and hardware to match the blank you buy.

I have fished grafighters my entire life and have all the 700 series. The 700h 30-80 is a pretty stout rod which I usually only use for a 50lb setup on long range trips out of SD, HOWEVER, today I actually brought it with when I fished out of timber cove b/c I needed a rod to handle a custom made 16 ounce swimbait and it worked absolutely great. Plenty of bottom sensitivity if you fish straight braid to flouro and still fun on the lings b/c it has a little tip to it. A more all around strong rod that's not quite as heavy is the 700mh 25-60, which Is an awesome choice too with a little lighter tip. Either way they are both overkill for anything in nor cal and I would only get one if you plan on using it specifically for heavy 8-16oz baits.

Also, yes my buddy can do those types of wraps you posted in the pictures above, pm me your info and I'll have him give you a call.

IMHO, for most kayak fishing the GF 700 ML or GFX 700 ML is as heavy as you need. I own the whole series, 700 XL, XLH, L, ML, M, H. if you are on a kayak and not on the deck of the RP, a ML is enough to land most fish under 75#. If you are fishing Guadalupe for 100# tuna, go with the GF 700 H and a 40# 2 speed. For kayak fishing NCAL, the GF 700 XLH is all you need.
