Has anybody paddled the American within the last week? I'm thinking of going in around the Buisness 80 area and fishing for striper over at my favorite spot. Also gonna be trying for steelhead, even though I've never fished for it. I'm off that day so anytime is good for me, but I would prefer to go early to get the most out of the day. Anyone interested or have any tips/suggestions?

Regarding steelhead ... nightcrawlers behind a corky will work.  Hotshot lures work also.  I'm going to try the American River this Friday also, but at Howe Ave in the late morning after it warms up a little.

the striper at Howe are bigger :smt005 Wish I could get out there with you guys... I drop a minnow out there too... Sardines on a hook free lined threw a sinker slip tube at the bottom of a current run that falls to deeper water allowing it to slide down stream slowly will usually fool the big striper into gulping it down. 3ft floro-carbon leader usually seals the deal on spooky fish... Have fun and post pictures for us landlocked at work :smt044
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

thanks for the advice, I'll pick up some supplies today. Is the current pretty strong out there? My experience on my kayak are limited to the port. I've only fished the American on my aluminum boat.

what time you headed out tomorrow? I think I'm gonna join you over on Howe. I've never fished that end of the American and its always good fishing new spots.

Currents can get a little weird but as long as the flows are not at flood stage :smt005 usually fairly easy. Stay away from bridge pilings... Water can be deceptive and has FORCE! Wish I could join you :smt012 Work has gotta come first right now though :smt001 At least I like wrenching on Cars all day :smt006

Sorry, plans got changed and I won't be out there tomorrow.  Be careful if you go because they increased flows to 2,600 cfs.  It was flowing pretty swift earlier this week at 2,000 cfs.

might have to go somewhere safer since i'm not an experienced yaker yet. I'll probably just go to the port . I'll be out there from 9am to around 4pm or so.
