I saw this story on the national news tonight. One thing with the SF Gate article is that its states the Chinook as the other species

Quote
Using gene-manipulating technology, Aquabounty adds a growth hormone to the Atlantic salmon from another type of salmon called the Chinook. The process, company executives say, causes its salmon to reach maturity in about two years, compared with three to four years for a conventional salmon.

When the news along with other articles i have read states the ocean pout
Quote
AquaBounty's Atlantic salmon contain a growth gene implanted from another variety of salmon that's activated by DNA from an eel-like creature called the ocean pout. The altered fish can grow to "market weight" of as much as 13 pounds in two or three years, compared with three to four years required for natural salmon,

Interesting none the less.

Genetics and their impact on our food supply keeps coming up in threads.  It has an impact on human health as well with gene therapy.   I'm going to start another thread at some point to discuss these issues, but for now,   man,   what will they think of next!

If AquaBounty is so damn concerned about U.S. aquaculture why haven't they stood up and supported the Lunnys?

I just saw this on TV the other night. They injected genes from a chinook into a salmon to make it grow bigger, and genes from an ocean pout to make the salmon grow year round. What is scary is that California recently rejected prop 37 requiring the labeling of food containing GMO. So this may wind up on your plate without you knowing.

I remember reading an article a few years ago, where GM salmon in Norway escaped from their farm, and made into the North Sea.  One fear, once is that these fish can compete with their normal counterparts  or worse start to use them as their food chain.  A few years back one such company crossed Atlantic cod with Atlantic salmon.  They looked like king salmon.  I think the fish tasted like crap, from what I heard.

In Alaske there is a bounty f anyone catches an Atlantic salmon out of their waters. Canada had some escape a pen a fwe years ago and Alaska fears that they may somehow cross breed with one of their many salmon stocks.

I guess there is a lot of worry around genetics, and dont get me wrong it sounds scary to me too.  But after reviewing the findings, the FDA sounds like they aren't:

Quote
After reviewing the company's data, the FDA said in a public hearing in September of 2010 that Aquabounty's salmon is "as safe as food from conventional Atlantic salmon." The FDA also said the fish "are not expected to have a significant impact" on the environment.

So, do we not trust the FDA?
