Last year I stayed near this place called Fishing & Snorkel sales and rental and rented a rod and reel for $10 for the week and fished right in front of my hotel.

You can try this guy on Maui. He's really good.  Not real cheap though.

I head to Maui regularly.
Stop at Wal-Mart when you get there and pick up a rod/reel combo for about $25.
Next, stop at a grocery store and pick up a box of frozen squid.
Finally, find a secluded beach that has a lava finger that you can hike out to the deeper stuff.

On Maui, I head from Kihei head south toward Wailiea-Makena.  Go past Makena Landing Beach Park.  Continue driving until you see a small parking area on the left (Ocean is on the right).  If you get to a side street called Honoiki St. you just missed it.   Look for an opening in the lava rock wall.  It may be blocked by vines.  There you will find a very small beach bracketed by lava jetties.

Remember;
All beach is public property.  Don't let anyone try to run you off.  (No one's ever bugged me but just saying)
There is no fishing license required for Hawaii.

If you are lucky, in that parking area where the lava wall is, a kid with a hot dog cart will be there later in the morning.  He sells kabobs of fish that he caught the night before.  He used to charge a buck and throw in a baked potato as well.  Buy 3 or so kabobs and be sure to bring a beach mat, some POG and rum and a paperback book.  Paradise!!

Of course, always stop off and pick up a mask/snorkel and fins.  Boss Frogs is good.  Get the cheapest set; the stuff that looks like it came from the 50's.  Works great and will only cost about $5 for a week's rent on the three for the cheapest.

If you have your own rod/reel, buy a cheap plastic gun case from WalMart before you leave and pack the equipment in that.  A cheap pad lock too.  But usually I just buy from the local Wal Mart and then give it away to some local kid when I leave.

Oh, want to add;
Try to go to Maalaea where the main harbor is.  It's on the way to Lahaina from Kiheai.  Walk out on the sea wall and cast away!!  I've caught some pretty interesting things off that wall.

Charters are 'different' in Hawaii.  You, the paying customer, does not keep the fish you catch.  First time I hired a charter I was blown away when we got back to the harbor and the deck hand started to clean the fish.  I asked him to wait while I got my ice chest.  That's when I found out the fish belong to the boat, not to me and that I do not get any.  I could buy it from him if I wanted.  By that time I was pretty sure I was being ripped off and wasn't interested in spending any more money than the hundred or more I had already spent.  Further checking, all Hawaii charters keep the fish with the boat, not the customer.  I learned my lesson that day!!!

Just be sure when you make a charter reservation that it states;

Fish Disposition: Keep your catch

Yup. Fish is theirs. I went out on a charter that claimed that all billfish were released. That day I landed a blue marlin that was 366 pounds. How do I know what it weighed? Because it wasn't released.
