River salmon and steelhead

Gents,

I love in Novato, north bay.  I love catching salmon and steelhead and often drive to Oregon to fish on the rogue on a drift boat.  However, it's a very long haul. Any pointers on where to go that is closer, perhaps a day trip where I can catch them from my yak instead?  It appears there is some catching near Sacramento which is still a couple of hours one way.  Anything off say 37 toward vallejo or up north on 101. Research is sketchy.
