Has anyone seen the the new proposed/approved Sturgeon reg's. from what I read snares are no longer allowed and hooks must be barbless. I think a few other things have changed but this will be my first year chasing Sturgeon so I am still trying to mesmerize the reg's.

Sorry if this was covered already. On another note if anyone has tips for hunting down Sturgeon in the San Pablo bay/ Napa River network it would be greatly appreciated. I have about worn out the search function.

Best,
Phil

I heard same thing. Also cant use two hooks anymore. Single barbless hook. I know some people like to use 2 hooks with 2 different baits.

Take a look at the post above, at the bottom of the first page Yester put some links, look at the one that says ..........regs............

Quick release anchor system is a must foir safety more than fighting a fish,  also read the Article here on site about sturgeon fishing.

once been mesmerized by fishing regs, only the fish.

See attachment for complete details.  Size limit, between 40 and 60 inches, measured from the snout to the tail fork
Method of take:  Single barbless hook.  No snare may be used (studies have shown that many fish die after being snared)
Removal from water:  No sturgeon greater than 68 inches may be removed from the water.

I have developed a de-hook devise that removes a hook easily, with very little trama to the fish.  It is a four foot bamboo pole, with a heavy wire S hook (make, or from hardware store) attached at the end, so the hook is going just the opposite of a gaff.  Engage the hook on the leader, slide it down to the fish hook and give a little push.  See pic

Thanks for the post RC. It may not be popular but I agree with you on the snare. So many are damaged by improper snare above the pectorals and other methods. I guess we are going to have to be more creative on landing the keepers. C U OTW
