I haven't seen any reports so I searched on here and found some old posts, but still no answers.  One post stated that the dungies don't go that far south.  Has anyone tried crabbing for dungies in Monterey?  I'll be down there fishing next weekend and wanted to drop some pots but dont know where.  A friend of a friend caught limits of dungies at Monterey in 50ft depths, but that is as much info I was able to get through my friend.  Any info is appreciated.

A friend of mine fished for them commercially but he said they are deep on the canyon walls.  Over 300 ft deep.  That's a lot of rope!

Ya don't see any reports of Monterey dungie crabbing because it isn't the ideal place to go for dungies from a yak.

Most of those that do crabbing here in Monterey use boats to drop their pots at 200'+ FOW. To pull pots that deep from a yak in the open ocean is kinda crazy as well as dangerous.

It's hard to believe fishermen tales in general, (especially a friend of a friend) if ya know what I mean ;) But if he's able to get em at 50', I don't think that he's gonna give that spot up lol!!

Most people will head north to HMB to go crabbing, where it is much easier to get em. Over there, you can drop the pots at 50' and get your limits :)

Cool...thanks for the feedback everyone.  I asked again and he said he simply goes out the harbor and looks for 50ft on sandy bottoms.  Obviously, he's not being anymore specific than this so I'm guessing he's not willing to share more details on his spots.  Also, I know its not a fisherman tale because my close friend has been gorging on the crabs that the guy brings back every few days.

I guess next weekend will have to be just a fishing trip.  I may just drop a pot or two and see whats happening for the hell of it.  I'll report back next week.

Plenty of "other" crabs, but no dungies. At least, not shallower than 150. Although I have heard rumor of dungies NE of Moss in 120ft. If you have time, patience, and crabpots go for it! You'd be the pioneer for Mbay crabbing if successful. And that w/b pretty cool. You'd probably have a lot of people following you around all the sudden too.
