Does anyone use the Scotty Trap ease trap roller to pull up their traps?  Is this just over kill or do a lot of people use it?

This is what I was thinking of getting.

Don't take my word for it, I've only been out crabbing from a yak once. But since I was using hoops and pulling a LOT I'd still say I wouldn't use it. Even if $$ wasn't an issue, wouldn't it put more weight further out to the side of the yak? Probably doable, but I've found I like to keep my center of gravity over the middle of the boat.

Overkill... The less gear and gadgetry on your kayak the better, especially when dealing with crab pots. Just lift the suckers out of the water. I find it's easiest if I lift the bouy up and over my lap, and let the current pull the slack line as I lift. That way it doesn't get tangled.

I had a gift card burning a hole in my pocket so I bought one.  I sued in an exsiting scotty mounty I had.  It has its usefulness in deeper water, but for a shallow depth like I was HMB recently (10-20) feet no real advantage.  If I were working a lot of traps deeper yeah it would save some effort.  I did notice it did help secure the trap when I was moving from location to location by having it in my lap and straddling over the trap ease, which meant I could paddle without having to place the trap behind me.   That alone made it worth the purchase.  Again I only have one outing with it, on an exsiting scotty mount.  It wasn't ideal but it worked.  I suppose I will make adjustments later on.

I like mine because I use leverage over power and it allows me to maintain good balance.  I've had it for a year now and pulling pots/traps easy peazy even in big swells.  Doesn't take up that much room and it's weighs half a pound.

This thing isn't gonna make your pots any lighter, your just pulling in a different direction with the same force. I guess switching it up may be easier on your shoulder. Only one way to find out I guess.

IMHO it does help. We do drop pots during HOW Crab events and they make easy work of pots especially if you weight your pots.

Yes they are helpful with deep or multiple drops. At the end of the season I can sometimes pull over 30 hoops.
