What a great day on the water!

Matt, his son Grayson left early Sunday for Lodi, where we met up with Dan and piled in to the Headwaters team van.  We arrived at Amador right as people were launching. Since I have spent the last 7 weekends at tournaments, I decided to hang out a bit with the late starters and eventually make my way to the water to take some photos and maybe catch a trout or two.

The lake was packed, kayaks, shore anglers and power boats everywhere!  I had planned to troll as I played photographer, but the crowd was such that I decided to keep my lines dry.  After I made the rounds near the dam, I moved to less crowded waters and dropped my lines and trolled around chatting to other contestants.

Thanks to all of those who made the tournament.  I was glad to see most people catch fish, including Grayson Ferris who landed his first fish, a 9 inch bluegill!

Thanks for the pic Adam. Good job again Jim.Had a good time over the two days I was there. Caught about 15 fish and lost several more. Never could find any Bass or Crappie.
@Matt. It happens. :-) Mike is a good fisherman and deserved the win. I'm just glad I was able to catch fish a this one.

Had a awsome time fished with or near Rob most of the  day and got schooled the whole time .I need to work on my patience  :smt003 I couldn't troll slow enough  :smt003 .The short strikes and ldr's made it a bit frustrating but still a great time...Thanks Jim see ya at the port  :smt006

Thanks Rob, it was nice fishing with you!

Here is my report...
7am start I planned on targeting trout all day. I never fished this lake before but I knew it had some decent fish. 1st fish right off the bat near the docks on a firetiger J5. I then got 1 small fish on a white grub/yellow egg combo but decided to remove it after several shorts strikes. I then went with a black woolly bugger w/ purple tail on a 4ft flouro leader and a 1/4oz bullet. I caught 1 decent fish on the woolly but again several shorts strikes and a LDR. Meanwhile the fish that where hitting the rapala seem to stick with only a few misses.

I eventually switched both koke rods to FT rapalas (J5 and J7) for 8 fish total on the day. All trout were 14" - 17" and were very lively for the most part. The weather was perfect and everyone had a great time. The picture pretty much says it all. Good stuff!

I'm glad everyone had a good time, though I didn't fish, the weather and camaraderie more than made up for it. :)

I'm putting the numbers together to see how the series points are stacking up and will post as soon as I can (fussy 11 week old makes this harder than I would have thought...)

Thanks again to everyone who showed up, especially the new members!  I am glad we can get some more people involved locally in the sport (and really like the venue to push my trash pick-up agenda  ;) )

I had about 6 hits that did not stick, had one grab that I thought would break my micro light rod in the river arm, it bent the rod back so hard it turned my PA around, line was ripping off the reel and finally after about 15 seconds the hook pulled out  (one of the hooks on the treble was bent straight), big catfish maybe?  Ended up with a skunk for the day even though two days earlier I had caught and released 14 out of a boat using the same gear and lures.  I had to leave around noon to take my son back to UCDavis so I missed the pot luck and awards.  This was my first NCKA event and it was great to meet some of the guys.
