This makes absolutely no sense to me. So a net, where the crab is free to leave at any time, has to be checked every two hours, but a death trap cage has no bottom time limit. Just goes to show how much the almighty dollar is behind a lot of our fishing regs.

For those fishing with hoop nets, remember that regulations require raising the nets to the surface to inspect the contents at least every two hours. Any undersized crabs or other species that are accidentally caught can be more quickly released. This regulation ensures that fishermen closely monitor their gear and do not allow any equipment to be abandoned in state waters. Trap fishermen should also closely monitor their traps because lost trap gear can continue to fish and become a self-baiting crab killer.

I don't think the 2 hour rule is new.  I recall seeing it for the 2011-2012 season.  Makes sense when you think about it.  It takes me almost that long to find them with a GPS...lol

The two hour rule is only for hoop nets, not for pots/cages. How does that make sense?  :?: :?:

Aren't pots supposed to have rotten cotton?  (To prevent becoming self baiting death traps.)

I'm wondering if this ties into using hoop nets down south for lobster?  I have heard people dropping empty hoop nets around popular lobstering locations to "mark" the spot in the morning and come back in the evening and bait them up when the lobsters started to crawl.

I also know some harbors have loose regulations that you must be within 100 yards or so of your gear.

Only escape rings are required on traps.

If this season opener is like last year, I will check them just to throw out the 5 3/4 and keep the 7 1/2 + in there.  Can't make it to the opening so save me some guys. :smt003

I just don't get it... Do you think these guys just got their nomenclature wrong? Hoop traps can't become self-baiting death traps... When the crabs finish munching all your bait, they can just crawl away... Box traps, not so much...

Where would be a good place to drop a crab crap at pier?

Maybe list what piers are good to crab and fish at?

I'm asking because I have no way of getting out to sea and setting a pod at 300ft

I'd say most of us (yak wise) crab 40 - 60 feet. Who wants to hand pull 300ft of line....AND deal with it on deck!

Pacifica Pier might be a good place to start.  300ft?!?  :smt044 :smt044 :smt044  Pots are set in less than 50FOW, especially early in the season.  Do a search on 'crab' and you'll find all the info you need.

+1 on Pacifica.  I've only used snares from Pacifica in the past and have done well most times.  Don't bother using hoop nets there, you will most likely lose it...you can see the graveyard of hoop nets under the pier during lowtide.  Not to mention I've never seen much caught on them.

Good luck.
