OK, so let’s lay the ground rules by stating some facts;

A. I’m poor, not living in the projects eating canned cat food poor, but more like three kids need new shoes so daddy doesn’t get to fill his tank at the end of the month poor.
B. I’m a cheap bastard (see A.)
C. I am not hung up on looks, (if I was I would cry myself into a breakdown in the mirror every morning)
D. When I see tools, and duct tape (or any fixative/adhesive for that matter) my fingers start to twitch and I get a peculiar kind of itch at the back of my neck?

So I bought an old Ocean Kayak Malibu 2…

My primary fishing vessel is a 14’ Perception Prism, it is my first kayak ever, it was,, what I could afford when I decided if kayaking was going to be a hobby or a habit. Well it’s a habit, so I was on the lookout to get some allies for my habit by having a spare kayak to take some friends out with me, or, sigh, I could take my kids, (I love my kids but, well, you get plenty of peace and quiet when you are pushing up daisies right?) So I found an old OK Malibu tandem for sale.

Now calling this “Old” is perhaps,,, optimistic.

It was a former rental kayak. It has one handle on the whole damn thing (at the back,,,) it has no hatches or access to inside the hull (but rattles like a rain-stick when you move it?) has repairs (badly done) at every scupper hole, it has a giant dent in the hull at the bow, and it has a damage pattern on the side that looks like it was attacked by an OCD badger for the better part of an hour. Did I mention it was cheap?

So I get to learn how to Plastic Weld, no problem, looks fun, I have seen some vids around somewhere on “massive dent removal,” and removing the badger-marks, well I can probably get somewhere with an x-acto knife and a torch, but I would love to see what kind of rigging you guys would suggest for general purpose use?

The bulk of the time I will use this kayak, I will either be floating it myself or another friend will be using it solo with me (very rarely tandem,) also I am not thinking of spending hundreds of dollars to fish-pimp this with electronics and what-not (man I hate that word,) I am looking more for,, ease-of-use suggestions along the lines of interesting milk-crates, PCV erector sets, or cooler-contraptions that you guys have seen installed on other kayaks?

One of the most painfully glaring failures of my Prism is that it doesn’t have a usable drink holder….

Also this kayak has blank-outs for hatches, but they haven’t been cut in, have you guys seen anything interesting besides spending $40 each for new OK hatch covers?

Any cool rigging or interesting (cheap) items you have seen built into a kayak would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Let me explain something to you. Um, I am not "Mr. Lebowski". You're Mr. Lebowski. I'm the Dude. So that's what you call me. You know, that or, uh, His Dudeness, or uh, Duder, or El Duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing.

i vote you add a monkey or gorilla suit for yourself....RIDE THAT BANANA. If you wanna keep it simple

1. fix the leaks (esp the scuppers)
when it doesn't leak
2. Add a few scotty mounts.
3. A cheap-o stock OK seat (post on classifieds, someone has one or two)
4. Add a handle to the bow.
5. QRAS (sounds like you fish fresh water)
Since you don't have a real tankwell I would spend a couple bucks on a soft sided/bottom cooler (with a cup holder on the lid). That will fit in the seat area

Call it done and go fish. Its a beater, you are cheap......Or simply said at the :39 second mark.

And just now reading more carefully, you have a Perception Prism?!?!  Does it have the MC Hammer geometric 1980's graphics?  I had one of those, fast boat.  I remember running into Chris/Hat Trick while chasing stripers at San Quentin.  He was like, "GD your boat's old!!"  And that was over five years ago now.  Soooo, i'm just passing along the same chit I got from him lol.

Got a scotty mount or two for the banana, if we ever meet.  Gotta  subsidize your cheapness so your kids won't go barefoot

Milk crate is probably the cheapest most useful add on.

Throw on a rod holder or two for trolling and your done.  Everything else is just for showing off.

This is probably a good buy. Once you ensure that it is seaworthy, there is no reason why you cannot turn it into an optimally rigged, efficient fish-killing vessel. Enjoy the process.

That's the OG Malibu 2...same kayak I used to paddle. It's kinda bargy. Like  driving a 70's Caddy w/out power steering.
I'll try to take some pics of my old milkcrate w/pvc rodholders. It was the perfect addition because I could move i around the deck & strap it down wherever I needed it. Then just install a few Scotty flush-mount bases for a rod holder. For a cup holder, just get some foam beer coozies & velcro tape. (-:

Just use a milk crate to hook up four pvc pipes to hold the fishing rods n other stuff (bungee it down on the kayak when using), buy a cheap seat (depends how long u want to be on it and how strong ur back is) and you are good to go.

P.S. I've hooked up a cup holder on the milk crate to hold my pepsi or water bottle so there u go....

That is freakin genius! Best part is, I can steal velcro from my wife's sewing kit,,,, no idea where to get a coozie, but I am sure I can find one in a thrift store <LOL>

Looking forward to seeing Milk Crate pictures!! (already got a crate!)

I am thinking that every dollar I save here is going towards my 4.7, at this rate, barring a freak lottery win, this time next year i may have the $$ to buy one.... Damn I need a new job <LOL>
