I have been kayak fishing the delta for 4 years or so, usually on the water 100 days a year or more.  With so many participants out there, I thought I would provide a few saftey tips so everyone can have fun.

  • Don't block the channels...paddle or peddle just outside the weedlines along the rocks so the PB's can pass through safely.
  • Don't anchor in the middle of the channels or on blind corners and bends.
  • Don't cross the channels with a trolling line out, the fish stack along the weed edges anyway.
  • If you get busy rigging a bait, or photo-ing a fish, get to the side along some tules.  The wind can quickly take you into the channels when your guard is down.
  • Keep your eyes and especially your ears open.  A bass boat can cover a lot of ground at 70 mph, but you can hear them before they get too close.
Have fun out there and good luck.

And don't forget that hidden steep drop off down by the boat launch at low tide.

Thanks for the tips HB,
I chose the launch area, because it is in the middle of a 5mph zone, unfortunatley many PB's have not learned to read the posted signs.
The tips posted above are definatley worth adhearing to.
There is a lot of water to fish, so take your time, enjoy the day, and be safe.

See Ya There,
Eric / Yakhopper

P.S.
One more tip ...
Watch out for your buddies, who might be buisy tying on a lure or landing a fish

Feel free to take a pic of a boats CF# should they put you in danger.
I'm sure with an ID we could sort things out from there.  :smt002

Eric, Tiki is a good choice.

There are two 5mph zones...one just outside Tiki, and the other is just outside Turner Cut.  There is a 250-300 yard stretch between that is not 5 mph, and a lot of boats gun it in between.  Just be aware, when in the unrestricted zone that boats don't have to go 5mph.

HB - Do you think it is safer to fish on the anchor if you are casting and not trolling?

be careful and don't assume the boaters can see you, they may be looking at the wake boarder they are towing or the girl in the bikini inside their boat and may already had a lot to drink or all of the above. Lost Isle ( used to sell the most Mai-tais in the US other than Hawaii) is closed this year, that used to be the epicenter for drinking in the delta, now is ski beach around the corner, lots of drunk in the area with daddy's boat.
if you have bough a flag for safety use it.
pay close attention where you are going, it all looks the same after a while, use a GPS if you have it. you always hear about jet skiers getting lost in the Delta.
wear sun protection and bring water, some snacks, a hat and sunglasses.

I never anchor so I don't know.  I would assume that anchoring down is fine.

Good advice scubaluis and others.  Thanks.

Whats the tide going to be like down there.  If I remember right last year it was heading towards the deep water channel in the am and by check in time mid-day it was heading back the other direction.  Made for a nice easy drift/troll.  Would make things easier to work shore lines if you are going with the current.
