We cooked up some olive rockies and while eating every last bit of meat off of them :smt005 My son-in-law found a little pearl shaped thing in the head area... is this the same type of onolith bone as WSB? do all fish have them? Didn't keep the piece, should have in retrospect... was not large, BB sized...
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

James,
I can help you out with your pendant. If you'd like it set in Sterling Silver. Actually fishhunters design in sterling would be pretty cool or if you have another idea I'd be happy to work up a design for you.

Ron,
Not 100% on this ,but I think what you found was the eye. After cooking Ling heads I found a similar white round object and was told
that's what happens when the eye cooks out. Eye tasted one before.  :smt003

Very cool pieces of jewelry there.

I really like the design Adam. I am going to make one this year. Like your circle hook choice also. I added some pewter beads which I bought at a Petaluma bead shop to finish my pendant. Painted them with clear finger nail polish to give them salt water corrosion protection. The beads cost about 75 cents. My mom passed away on the day I completed the pendant and I decided to wear it every day in memory of her. It has held up really well and the epoxy finish has prevented it from chipping.

All fish have otoliths but the size varies by species. Here is how to remove them from a rockfish:

I have heard vermillion have the largest otoliths of the rockfish species but I can't confirm. It would make sense since they are long lived.

BE careful leaving that in a car. The sun will destroy it over time. GREAT job though.

I will try and post some pics of the ones that came from my Verm at GMS6. I had Mark, "fishshim" (I think thats how its spelled) make mine, they came out AWESOME and they aren't heavy.
