Anyone know of any good spots in the San Francisco Bay (or nearby surrounding area) for catching shark from a kayak?  I've been out there a couple times already, but haven't even got a bite yet.  (I've been using squid and bullheads.)

I'd appreciate any tips.  Thanks!

I do really, really well in the Palo Alto and Redwood City harbors. I usually anchor up and toss some chum (chunks of old bait) and then toss a line...you do get a fair share of rays. Shark wise its usually leopards

I'm not much of a shark fisherman, but I've caught plenty near the Dumbarton bridge. And I've also caught some off shore at the San Leandro Marina. Squid, shrimp, anchovies, mackerel, its all worked for me. But like I said, I don't spend very much time targeting sharks. I should though, cause its fun as hell.

If you only want to catch sharks. Get Midshipment. Almost like a bigger bullhead with teeth and design on its skin. Even if the shark is not hungry it will bite the midshipment, i think its a territorial thing. I heard seven gill shark fishermen only use midshipment.

I dont kno any great spots in SF bay for sharks. But i go out to tomales and catch leopard sharks off a dock. I  caught the 50in leopard in my avatar at tomales. But usually i use Herring.

Thanks for all the replies.  Looks like I have some new places to try!   :smt001

For those who have had luck in the Redwood City Harbor, is there any specific spot there that seems to be good?  How about near the Marine Science Institute?

And how about a good launch/fishing spot around the Dumbarton Bridge?

And now that everyone mentioned it, I have heard of using midshipman before.  However, when I tried to buy some, I found them extremely hard to find in bait shops.

there are some channel markers as you exit the harbor. I just anchor near then (or tie off to them) and cast to the edge of the channel. if that doesn't work try shallow from the same spot. The launch is NEVER crowded, paved and FREE! I use squid b/c it stays on better if its dead fin bait you end up needed spider wire to keep on as they nibble. I am guessing you could access the dumbo from Fremont but the east bay dudes need to chime in on that one.

Dumbarton is an over the rocks and muddy launch. Not worth it. Go with Redwood City. Just my opinion.

(Easier launch) + (near marina) = less crime (probably).
Therefore, RWC > Dumbo.

Avoid worrying all day about that blacked out van parked at the foot of the bridge . . .

Although my shark fishing has always been from a boat, we had good luck off the west side of Angel Island for leopards and soupfins.  Yellow bluff off of Sausilito for 6 and 7 gill sharks.  And just north of the San Rafael bridge for leopards. Follow the charter boat "The Fury" and you will find sharks.
